Girlfinder Songs #2 - "Control"

It's the same conundrum I face when I walk into a strip club and there are three stages going at once. Where do I sit in order to part with my dollar bills? This morning, the Girlfinder found three songs by the same artist. Naturally, I chose the one with the biggest...never mind. We are at #2: "Control" by Poe. I absolutely love Poe. Born Anne Decatur Danielewski, Poe, thanks in large part to to signing perhaps the worst recording contract in musical history, has released just two albums since 1995 (basically, as a result of the 2001 Time Warner/AOL merger, Atlantic Records, part of the merger, was forced to drop Poe, despite the fact that they had just signed her to a three record contract extension due to impressive sales on her part. Her contract stipulated that Atlantic owned all past, present, and future material by Poe. She was literally prevented from creating new music for years thanks to litigation.) In 2000, Poe released her second album, Haunted, after discovering tapes of lectures given by her late father. Using soundbites of those tapes, Poe built the record around she and her father's relationship, but also managed to make the album into a companion piece to her brother, Mark Z. Danielewski's debut novel, The House of Leaves (if you are looking for a total mind [insert word that rhymes with "duck,"] of a book, I highly recommend it.) "Control" was released as a single, but failed to chart anywhere. But it is one hell of an empowerment tune. (I know. I used a strip club reference to open a piece about a song about a female discovering empowerment. The irony is mind boggling!) Did I mention that I love this woman? I've been lucky enough to see her twice, as both a headliner and as the opening act for Depeche Mode. And she is awesome. If you ever have the chance to see her, I highly encourage you to do so. Poe is awesome. Too bad that she hasn't been allowed to release more music. She did two great songs on the debut album by an electronic act that I like, Conjure One, and got into trouble. She sang on their second album, but had to use the name "Jane."
