Starting to feel a bit Christmassy

So far none of us seems to have been feeling very much like doing Christmassy stuff. Often in past years the girls have been clamouring to start decorating before December has even arrived, but not this year for some reason. And then once we did finally get the decorations out, we ran out of time and so for a week now the opened box has just been getting in the way in the middle of our living room and we haven’t had time to do anything about it. Of course it goes without saying I haven’t sent any cards, made a cake or done anything else either! The only thing we have managed is to make a wreath, because Little One was adamant that we should have one hanging at our front door, as she saw at several other houses, and we should make it. So yesterday we gathered an armful of bits and pieces and set to. We gathered some long whippy twigs that had blown off our birch tree in the recent windy weather, and twisted them into a circle then secured it with thin wire. Then we threaded in bits of holly, ivy, yew, fir and pine twigs (there has to be some advantage to our neighbour’s enormous pine trees!) decorated it with some bits of ribbon saved in my bits and pieces box, a little bell that came round the neck of one of those Lindt chocolate animals, and some pine cones we painted gold a couple of years ago. In a very short time we had managed to produce something that we were quite pleased with, and it was all free. Now Little One wants to make one for her teacher too. You did an excellent job, congratulations, I have to go out and cut some branches from my holly tree, I always manage to get some thorns in my fingers.

@Fleura We do not have holly bushes, but it's a tall holly tree, they have very sharp and hard thorns.

I managed to avoid that, I think perhaps because the holly bushes are growing in a relatively shady place the length of stem between the leaves is relatively long so you can get your hand in more easily.

Your wreath is beautiful. You are talented to create something that gorgeous from bits and pieces around your yard.

I am very much a bah, humbug person, but you seem to have gotten the seasonal spirit!

Depends what you mean by 'seasonal spirit'. I like the preparations at home, the feeling of anticipation that something special, magical, is going to happen. I do not like the idea that we all rush out and buy lots of tat to give to people who don't want it, then over-eat and then lounge around watching TV and stuffing our faces with chocolates.

@Fleura I don't mind a bit of lounging around in front of the idiot box, but over eating is a step too far
