A pretty much enjoyable day Christmas shopping

I drove to a larger town about an hour from here to do some Christmas shopping today. Of course the traffic was heavy and the stores were crowded, but I enjoyed it. Well, except for Walmart, that is. Why am I even surprised? I only had two items in my cart and saw that they had a long line in the only lane open to check out. Less than two weeks before Christmas and they have ONE lane open! What ails them? I decided to try to check out in the jewelry department. Two ladies ahead of me, one lady and the clerk were standing there. Just standing there. I have no clue what they were waiting for. So, I thought I'd try the electronics department. No one in line there! Paid for one of my items, then tried to buy a gift card. Did that work? Of course not. The clerk was nice, but for some reason in the universe, the gift card wouldn't ring up. She kept trying and trying and trying. I really was doing my best to not be impatient. She took me to another register and even the other clerk had no luck. Guess what happened then? I was told I'd have to go back to the front and stand in that only lane that was open. Thankfully, right then a manager happened to pass by and I told him how frustrated I was, just trying to buy a gift card. He said, "Come with me." We went to the front and he grabbed a clerk to ring up my card. Other than my blood pressure probably going through the roof, the rest of my shopping trip was delightful. Not at Walmart, at the other places I went. I came home and took a nap. But at least most of my gifts are bought and soon to be wrapped and put under the tree. Are you finished shopping for the holidays? How was your day today?

Your story reinforces why I do my Christmas shopping in October/November. Then I have more time for seeing Christmas lights, decorating, and listening to my Christmas carols. I think Walmart and other discount stores have been using those self-checkout registers more and more. Ever since they raised their minimum wage for employees.

I don't like to wait to the last minute, but I like shopping closer to Christmas. BTW, I hate those self check outs.

@dgobucks226 I can have three items and if I go to the self checkout, two of them won't scan.

Walmart. Ugh. The place irks me. But SOMETIMES they do have the best price. Not always thankfully. But their checkout lanes are abysmal. At the one we go to, even for the express lane, it's a practically 90 year old woman about 5 feet tall with arthritic fingers...I am NOT kidding. She moves like Tim Conway playing the old man on the Carol Burnett Show. Glad to hear you got the nightmare done. Or mostly. Yes, I did call it a nightmare. Any shopping for me is a nightmare.

A few Walmarts are more efficent than most. I do believe that. I really do.

@1creekgirl No. I agree. There are some that are better than others. I just wish there was more consistency.

I can imagine how annoying this would be. Sometimes something that should only take a minute or two takes twice as long as it should.

I avoid the stores this time of year. Too many maddening crowds.
