I have a question for those that have kids and want a Facebook page. How old do you have to be to have a Facebook page? My boyfriend says 18 I think it is 16 with parent supervision.

I just looked it up and you need to be at least 13 years old supposedly. I remember I had my first social media when I was about 13-14 that age as well. It was MySpace, also Xanga (Blog)
Facebook requires everyone to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account (in some jurisdictions, this age limit may be higher). Creating...

@Tina30219 You are welcome. All social media sites usually has a box before making an account you have to accept you're a certain age. But of course some people could lie and no one would know unless reported. I think one should join if they have parent consent, ex. link a Parent account or something at that age because it could be dangerous! At least 16!

Facebook's Terms state that you must be 13 or over to have a Facebook account. I believe that you must still have parental consent until you are 18 but they have rewritten the Help pages and I can't find where it says that now. Facebook now has something called "Kids' Messenger" which is an app that can be set up on a child's phone or tablet and which allows kids to message and video chat with family and close friends. I haven't any experience of using this but it is, apparently, set up by the parent. I am not clear whether it uses the parent's account or the child's own account and I don't find any mention of age limit. It's probably up to the parent if the Kids' Messenger account is ancillary to the parent's account.

If I am not mistaken, I think it says you have to at least be 13 - may be higher in some jurisdictions, it says. I didn't know that - but I know there are kids way younger than that that have an FB page . Kids need to be mature socially before having an FB page in my opinion - my daughter wants one but we won't allow it just yet.

@much2say It's 13 for most countries, 14 for Spain and South Korea.

I think it's sixteen but I could be wrong. I set one up for my niece several years ago and had to fudge her age. I don't know that there are parental controls n there at all, but that could have changed.

That’s what I am thinking also. I know a lot of people that fake their child’s age so they can have a page or the kid sets the page up and lies about their age

@Tina30219 Yes, I am sure that lying about the age online isn't anything new.

It is 13, but you can see younger people, they simply lie about their age. The internet can be a dangerous place for kids, it's important to look after them and educate about the risks, especially in case they're very young. However, I gotta say adults are naive and make their own mistakes on Facebook as well. I think whoever approaches social networks must go through classes first.

@Tina30219 I thought it was a young age because I see plenty of very young users on Facebook. I think that 13 is too young.

I think 16 is probably okay. My daughter is 14 and I allowed her to use Instagram about a year ago but I am not comfortable with her being on Facebook. She doesn't want to use Facebook now anyway she thinks it's for old people.

I think it's 13, like most sites. Which isn't a bad age, as long as parents know who their kids are talking to, only family and friends are on the friends list. And the page is private.

I think letting your daughter to use FB at the age of 16 is okay but with your supervision. Sometimes when teenagers know that you will have control on something, they will tend to use it with caution. Thus, they will create another FB account by themselves without your notice and then use it as they like. Communication is important and letting him know that what is right and wrong rather then restricting their personal activity.

Right. My daughter has one but don’t really use it. But she is 18 so I don’t worry

@Tina30219 Probably she is using another new one. or she is using other social media platform instead of FB. Do you ask her or suspect before? It is rare that teenagers not using any of them.
