More Laundry Adventures

I have written a couple of posts lately about my adventures in laundry. I talked about someone stealing my bras out of the dryer and some silly people I met on the way there or back. Today I thought I should wash so I have something to wear for church tomorrow. I got them washed with no problem but I started putting my clothes in the dryer and smoke started swirling out. This was not steam or mists but real smoke. It kept coming and increasing. I took the clothes out and put them in another dryer. The laundry manager came to pick up cash from the machines. I told him about the smoking dryer and he said it happens when the belt gets loose. I mentioned the squeaky dryer above it and he said there are metal wheels driving the drum and they get dusty. We wipe them down with a dryer sheet. He said if the vents get blocked the dryer catches on fire. Great to know! Thanks. Do you have laundry adventures? Tell us!

Once at home I tried washing this huge, thick comforter that we use as a picnic blanket - um, I guess it was too much for the washer to handle. It had this slowing down sound and I actually smelled that burned rubber smell . I took it out right away and took it to the laundromat where they can handle big items. That was a few years ago - and our washer still works - but I am always anticipating that the washer could die at any moment.

@akalinus Works thus far - but I keep wondering about that burnt rubber . . . I feel like the belt or whatever that is will one day split !

@much2say Maybe there is a youtube video about how to change the belt. Then you could buy a belt and change it yourself and save a ton of money.

Let;s hope your machine keeps running and that you remember to take big items to the laundromat.

@akalinus OK Since you insist (lol) The outlet pipe of our old machine got nibbled by a rat and we had a flood of soap water on the floor

Nothing interesting ever happens at your house? I remember my own machine. A bird flew in the door, hit the wall, and fell into the washer. Maybe it is just me, come to think of it.

We usually have the laundry activity every weekend. It is the best time to be working with the family together.

I am impressed that your whole family does laundry together. Mostly, I was stuck doing it for years.

@akalinus Perhaps my mom tried to teach us to be close to each other. Most of us are busy lately and weekends are the only time for us to be together as a whole family. Are you living alone? Or, is there anyone who can help you out?

@Shavkat I am living alone. My son moved to another city where he has a better job.

I always clean the filters of my dryer every time that I use it. I suspect that the manager does not clean the filter often enough.

@akalinus There is a second filter, the one that you easily clean every time you open the door and another one at the bottom of the machine. I take it out once a month, that one is more tricky to remove and to clean.

@LadyDuck These machines are stacked on top of each other. I don't know how to begin cleaning the filters.

There is a filter that we can clean. I do it every time. I also clean it for the next person to use it. But, I am pretty sure there is a lot of lint in the system from the eight dryers.

We used a laundromat when we first got married, but I was sure glad when we got our first washer. No adventures like yours, though.

I have washed clothes by hand before and it is a lot of work and never-ending. I am glad to have machines to do the work.

When I lived in an apartment I shared the laundry room with 80 other people and we had to book the laundry room about a week before we wanted to use it. One time I picked up my laundry and a woman had left an angry note in my basket. She accused me of stealing the hours that she had booked. She must have misunderstood something, I wasn't doing anything wrong. She seemed very angry, but I never met her in person.

@akalinus Maybe. I am just happy that I didn't meet her, because the note was written in a very angry way and she used some pretty bad words about me.

Older dryers are the worst for that kind of stuff. I haven't been to a launry mat in ages. When I was a young woman, that is how we would wash our clothes. We found a lot of thongs in a dryer once. We were the only ones in there, and had been for hours.

I am sure someone was coming back for the thongs when they remember them. Did you keep them? I just put things like that on the table for the owner to claim them.

@akalinus Oh no, I wouldn't keep another person's laundry, especially intimates. We left them in the dryer. The dryer was left open. I wonder if they ever went back for them, but I think that was probably doubtful.

@ScribbledAdNauseum There are times when the machines when you really need a machine. At those times, it is good to leave them on the table. At least, I do.
