Which books did you enjoy when you were a student?

I recently read an article about the books that we read at school. A journalist asked junior high students which mandatory books they enjoyed the most and which books they enjoyed the least. The article inspired me to think about the books that I enjoyed. In my Danish class we read a novel by a Norwegian author. The book describes a young girl who gradually becomes blind. She is in denial and she tries to hide the truth from herself and from other people, but eventually she has to accept the truth. We were supposed to read and discuss a few chapters at a time but I read the entire book the first day, and I really liked it. I also remember another book that I (sort of) enjoyed. It is novel by a local author, and it describes a psychiatric hospital during the 50s. It describes lobotomy and other things that aren't a part of psychiatric treatment today. The historical parts of the novel were interesting, but I really disliked the writing style. The author uses fragmented sentences and sometimes it hard to understand the meaning. Some authors do that to illustrate the way that people with mental disorders are thinking, but this author uses the same writing style in books about other topics. Some of the other authors I liked were Ursula K. Le Guin and Shirley Jackson. In my English class we had a horror theme, I don't remember the names of the authors or the short stories, but there were some great stories.

For what I remember we only read pretty heavy books as students ("Divina Commedia" by Dante, The Decameron by Boccaccio, The Iliad and Odyssey) nothing exciting.

A friend once gave me "Divina Commedia" but I didn't read it, the Italian version is much too difficult to read. I have read part of it, but only as a translation. We read "The Odyssey" at school but I haven't read "The Iliad"

@Porcospino The "Divina Commedia" is difficult also for an Italian born, it's written in ancient Italian and who knows what Dante had in mind when he wrote some phrases. I like to think he wanted to get mad those of the future generations.

Wow you sure read a lot. When I was in elementary we had a weekly book report and we are forced to read a book a week and write a report about it. I loved doing it as I used to be a bookworm. I think my most favourite back then was Guliver’s Travel. It’s about a man who got stranded in an island for tiny men.

We also had to write book reports, but not every week. Sometimes our teacher asked us to pick a book that we liked and make an oral presentation of the book. I enjoyed hearing about the books my classmates had read, because I love to read and sometimes I got interested in new books that way. I have never read "Guliver's Travel" but I remember that I liked the movie a lot.

@flapiz I have always read a lot (outside school) and reading is useful in many ways. My Danish teacher told me that the many books I read affected my own writing in a positive way.

There was this book for extra reading in my junior year in college.. a novel by Nevil Shute called A town like Alice. It describes the the scene in war torn Australia after the second world war and how love is born during the war .. Some how the description and the story line seems to have made a huge impact on me and still lingers around after all these years.

I have never read any of his books, but I read that he spent the last part of his life in Australia. Some books have that effect on us. We still remember them a long time after we read them and they really have an impact on us. I feel the same way about some of the books I have read.

@Porcospino The book I enjoyed the most as a student was the "ShreeRamcharitmanas" by the great poet Goswami Tulsidas. The book is an epic and is regarded as an holy scripture of us Hindus. I also loved to read wildlife books in Hindi and novels on Indian folk tales.

It is the first time that I hear about Goswami Tulsidas. My knowledge about your local authors is very limited. I have only heard of Rabindranath Tagore and Vikram Seth. "A suitable boy" has been translated to Danish, but I didn't manage to read all of it before I had to return it to the library. Novels about Indian folk tales sound interesting.

@porwest The beginning of a story is really important. I borrow a lot of books at the library. I don't finish them all, and when I abandon a book it is usually because I didn't find the first part interesting. Some authors get my attention from the start. and I try to learn from them when I write my own stories. The last writer you mentioned reminds me of some of the short stories I have read. They start well, and then they get weird. It is a pity. I keep thinking that it could have been a good story, but the potential was wasted.

@Porcospino I used to read a lot more. These days I just find myself lacking time. I was an editor for quite a few years, and so I think that quelled my reading a bit eventually. I had a rule...if your first paragraph did not get my attention immediately I immediately rejected the manuscript. I think most editors do it the same way. Too many submissions, and you can't waste time. That being said, there was a writer I worked with once who submitted 6 stories to me for an anthology. I rejected them all. She would start off really good, and then the story would just take this very weird turn. I kept thinking MAYBE this is the one...and then nope. I did tell her why I rejected her work though.
