Oh my, the Boston Tea Party happened today in 1773, they were protesting the taxes on tea and look at us now, aren’t you glad we no longer pay them thar taxes?? Nothing changes, it's still that same ole game, governments tax citizens and citizens try to protest. Does anyone pay taxes on tea?

The protest wasn't so much about the taxes themselves as about the fact that the taxes were imposed by a Parliament in which the colonies were not allowed to have an elected representative vote for their interests. In other words, it was about taxation without representation. As we have lived to find out since taxation with representation isn't so great either.

I knew there had to be more to that story ..... it's been too long since I graduate HS and of course much of what they tried to teach went in one ear, rolled around awhile and finally floated out the other

@rebelann As an elementary school teacher now, and a former middle school social studies teacher, I am reminded of these stories every year.

It's funny how we protested taxes then so we wouldn't have to pay Britain a cent more. And now the government wants to tax Text messages in California. We would burn down cell towers if we didn't need them to actually text haha!

@Plethos Well that is good, I thought they were going to vote about it in January, but I'm glad they didn't even take it that far because that would have been rediculous. Of course apps like Whatsapp would have been very happy with the flux of people coming in if that were to have happened haha

Nice picture There is a VAT on any product we buy here. I think tea is taxed at 5.5%.

@rebelann Most of food has a reduced VAT of 5.5%. The normal VAT in France is 20% paid by the final consumer.

That seems steep to me, but then in TX there are no taxes on foods, not sure about drinks though, I don't buy either tea or soft drinks.

Hmmm, seems to me I didn't double check my facts before writing the above discussion. So, you're not represented in the state of CA?

Oh how I wish we could all go back to horses and trains @Plethos at least with horses you get transportation and the only kind of emissions they create is fertilizer. As for trains, well, I'd rather see more trains to get us around than airplanes or cars. I know, yer gonna find a flaw in that dream ain't ya .... I iz shakin my head

@rebelann - its vastly democratic majority. all they seem to want to do or come up with are taxes. start of next year, gas will go up another 12 cents in taxes. half went into effect this year and the other half next year.

@rebelann If you buy groceries and tea is considered groceries, no taxes. If you buy fast food, it's taxed. I believe liquor is taxed, but I don't know because I don't drink.
