Day 16 John 8:1-11 John 8:1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. 3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what say thou? 6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. 7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. Are you a sinner? The definition of sin is someone who transgresses, or does something wrong. By that definition many would believe they are not sinners. People can live their entire lives without doing anything wrong. Yet, at the same time everyone can look at their neighbor and say with certainty they are a sinner. Why? The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus caught in the act of adultery. They wanted to know what he would do, citing the Law of Moses as their reference against her. Leviticus 20:10 And the man that commits adultery with another man’s wife, even he that commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. Deuteronomy 22:22 If a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel. What’s wrong with what the scribes and Pharisees did? They only brought the woman, they didn’t bring the man they found her with. People blame the woman in sexual acts but rarely the man. As Christians, you know everyone sins. No one is guiltless. Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that does good, no, not one. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (KJV) James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (KJV) Is there no hope for mankind? We are all sinners. We stand condemned before God. Our sin separates us from God. A guilty stamp covers us. Right? Romans 5:8 But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Jesus’ based his entire ministry, his death, burial, and resurrection on one thing – forgiveness. Jesus knew the woman sinned. He knew the scribes and Pharisees meant to make an example of her. However, in his grace and mercy, Jesus forgave her and told her not to sin again. He told her not to commit the sin of adultery again, since it was impossible for her or anyone to live without sin. It is only through the shed blood of Jesus that you can stand before God. Jesus’ blood covers you so that God doesn’t see your sin, but sees the righteousness of Jesus Christ on your life. Does that give us the freedom to sin? Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? (KJV) You are dead to sin because you accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord. You are dead to sin because when you sin, you can confess your sin and God will forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KJV) You have a way out of your sinful lifestyle through the blood of Jesus. Jesus made the way. You are no longer bound by your sin, anymore than the woman caught in adultery was bound to hers. Jesus forgave her, and he forgives you too. Let’s pray: Father, I know I am a sinner. Help me live in the hope of forgiveness when I come to you asking forgiveness for my sin. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Copyright © 17 December 2018 by Valerie Routhieaux

Amen! Yesterday, part of the sermons was that length of being a believer doesn't equal your spiritual growth. That long term believers can drift from Christ instead of closer. But we can make a conscious choice to reach out to God for strength and guidance to make better choices to sin less and become more Christ like
