New Year's food traditions

Tonight my husband and I went through some of our recipes, because we wanted to plan our New Year dinner. This year we don't get any visitors on New Year's Eve, but we still want to have nice a dinner. Many Danes eat cod on New Year's Eve, but we don't follow that tradition. We want to experiment with some new recipes and we found a Turkish meat dish that we will try. We are also going to have potatoes, stuffed tomatoes and a cucumber salad. The dessert will be pancakes with fruit and a bit of ice cream. From January that kind of dessert will no longer be part of our diet, so we are going to enjoy it while we can. The traditional Danish New Year cake is called "kransekage", but it contains almonds which I can't eat, so we are going to skip that one. Are there any traditional New Year dishes or cakes in your country?

Stuffed tomatoes! Your tomatoes in Denmark must be big ones.

We usually buy the biggest tomatoes we can find and we fill them with bread crumbs, garlic, parsley and cheese. It is a recipe I got when I was living in Italy.

@amadeo I think that there are some similaries between Greek and Turkish food. I once visited a Turkish restaurant in my area, and the food was very good. I hope that our dish will turn out well.

What is name of that festival or how do you celebrate it? Here fish is a popular New Year dish, but we usually eat some kind of meat instead.

@responsiveme It is the first time I hear that name. We used to have harvest celebrations in my country, but it is not common anymore.

I have seen photos of Irish Christmas Cake, it looks really good. Many Danes eat cod with a special type of mustard sauce. It is pretty expensive, so some people choose cheaper options. We are trying something different this year (the Turkish dish) and I hope that it will be delicious.

In our tradition, there is no special food for the New Year. People get the food they like.

Here many people like to eat cod, but it is expensive and sometimes people choose other kinds of food. My husband and I have chosen something different and my parents didn't follow the cod tradition either.

My family ate blackeyed peas and salt pork or bacon. Hubby does not like the blackeyed peas. He would like the cod. Potatoes are great however you fix them.

I have never eaten blackeyed peas, I have only seen them on pictures. Cod is a very popular New Year dish here, but we usually eat other kinds of food.

It's the usual ham, pasta or whatever food the people can afford to lay on the table; but we have native foods like suman or rolled sticky rice with coconut milk in banana leaf, or the puto bumbong or powdered sticky rice with violet food color, butter and sugar and cooked inside bamboo tubes. They are delicious native foods.

It was interesting to read about your native foods. Puto bumbong sounds delicious. Many Danes eat meat and potatoes, but I like rice, and I didn't miss our local food when we were travelling around in Asia.
