In my opinion the idea behind a pyramid business is more common than we consider. I think most business run on a similar theme, but since the brink and mortar businesses have been around forever most people don't consider them to be the same at all.
Most chain stores and larger conglomerates have a similar set up where the ceo's and top leadership make a heck of a lot more money than those needed to keep the business afloat, like the entry level positions of cashiers and stocker, drivers that sort of thing.
I did Amway back in the seventies and later in life I did it's online counterpart Quixtar. I also was a part of leadership groups that sold Amway but were separate from them. I think what you need to look at is what are they selling to the general public and is it affordable? Then is it good quality?
Many times the quality is fantastic, but the majority of people cannot afford to purchase the products. Without finding people to purchase the products you won't make any money and it will be hard to find others to come in under you if neither of you see any benefit to what's being sold.

@Acefun I'm surprised you've heard about herbalife. I tried to sell that back in the eighties. I wasn't able to sell any to anyone else though and eventually got out of it. I think it's made another comeback as I saw a mylotter talking about it this past year.

The business is still growing in small scale and not as popular in my country.
In Us, I think there is cases whereby the sellers promote that the products are able to cure certain diseases and the company was being sued for giving misleading information.
At the same time, the market is too concentrated as too many distributor. People are disappointed about the company and not one is willing to buy the product. When there is no demand for it, the distributors are not able to close any deal yet they need to pay for the membership. A lot of people joining the company eventually leave at the end.
Is this the situation where you have faced?

Yes, i agree that.
I think only few MLM business is legal and able to sustain more than few decades.
Amway is one of them. My parents are the member but they do not acquire for downline. The products are good but the price is a bit higher as compare to similar items sell in supermarket.
Herballife seem like legal but there are issue with the claim made by the members towards potential buyer (I think).
When the MLM involve investment then most of them are scam.
