A Lazy Christmas Staycation

Victorian Home Decorated for Christmas in Paso Robles

I have been on a vacation from most social media for a few days so that my mental batteries could recharge. I've also been taking it physically easy for the most part. We were going to visit friends near our former house in Ventura County for Christmas Eve, but Hubby didn't feel good enough to go on a trip. He has some sort of mild virus. We really weren't up to a six-hour round trip, even if we could spend the night and go home on Christmas Day. As it turned out, I wasn't feeling great myself by Christmas Day and I was glad I wasn't having to drive for three hours to get home. I hate to admit it, but we didn't even get dressed on Christmas Day. I didn't cook special food. We had salmon, broccoli, baked sweet potatoes, and brown rice. We had a Costco pumpkin pie for dessert. We didn't miss having a big holiday dinner. What we had was tasty and adequate. We did miss being with family and friends, but we also enjoyed just being able to stay home and relax. I read several books during Christmas week, played with my new phone, and almost ignored my computer. I went for a couple of walks. One was on the Saturday before Christmas. I got a haircut in the late afternoon, did a bit of grocery shopping, and then walked the entire route of the Vine Street Victorian Showcase by myself from dusk until dark. That's 26 blocks round trip. The Vine Street Victorian Showcase is a free community event on a Saturday night a couple of weeks before Christmas. There are ongoing musical performances, carolers, dancers, a snow slide for tubing down, an ice sculptor at work, and all kinds of free hot drinks and snacks. The biggest attractions, though, are Scrooge's house and the home of the Grinch. Both Scrooge and the Grinch play to the crowds who interact with them. All the houses along the route are decorated with lights, and some are quite elaborate. Usually the homes stay that way until at least Christmas, but this year many were dark by the night I walked. Actually, by the time I took my walk, there was little left there to see. No crowds, no refreshments or music. Just several scattered lighted houses. But the walk was much needed exercise and I enjoyed it -- even though I didn't have anyone to walk with. A few days before Christmas I saw a brief review of a John Grisham book -- Skipping Christmas. I put a hold on it and finally got and read it yesterday. It was hilarious and warm-hearted. Just a fun Christmas story. I was able to borrow the ebook from my local library without leaving my computer. I now get a lot of books that way. Have you read this book? Do you ever borrow ebooks from your library? Did you do anything different that usual during this holiday season?

@wolfgirl569 I worry about Hubby. I am not sure he's really sick. I think his respiratory problems may be allergies, but because he thinks he's sick he doesn't go exercise. And that may be keeping him feeling less strong.

@bagarad That is very good to hear. It is no fun being sick and even worse when both are at the same time.

I seem to have more time for myself this year, sleeping . That is, after I did my duty, attending two parties, one from work, one from the family.

@bagarad I thought I did on that day, but two days later, I suddenly got mad when I remembered a few events happening at that place. (I am a slow person .)

I have never read anything by John Grisham. He writes religious books doesn't he? The Vine Street Victorian Showcase sounds amazing and I recall reading before about Scrooges house here. That is to bad that while you walked all those blocks there was barely anything to see

He usually writes legal thrillers --- some very good, some not so good. I didn't like The Rooster Bar at all, but The Firm and The Client were good.

Not a big deal really if you have not spent Christmas the way society demands as long as you enjoyed your time.

I'm beginning to care less and less about what society demands. I obey the laws and vote. I've never been a socialite.

You had a quiet and full Christmas. With me being up in years,I am a bit weary of the festivals now,in which I have pretty hectic days and am mentally and physically exhausted.

@changjiangzhibin89 I'm still getting used to the idea that I'm old now. I don't feel old inside, but my body reminds me I'm no longer able to do all I did when I was twenty years younger.

I'm no spring chicken, myself, anymore. I'm feeling that same weariness. It's a lot of work to host or even attend celebrations. I know many people keep doing it even into their eighties. My mom did, but we all helped her.

We went to Church during Christmas and played parlor games which was a lot of fun. After that we went to a natural spring nearby for a dip.

No. It's not my house. It's a house on Vine Street -- a street where all the houses on certain blocks have to decorate for the holidays. Most of them are Victorian homes. Many of them now house businesses, since they are only a block from the center of town.

Christmas is a festivity to be celebrated in a way which makes you feel comfortable so if you want to spend the day in your jammies then go ahead!. I haven't read that book and I have never borrowed a book from an e-library. As usual we went to our daughter's for Christmas dinner. Lovely!

It's always good to be with family on Christmas -- as long as family members enjoy each other. Ours do. I'm very thankful for that.

Hi Barbara. I enjoyed reading about your Christmas activities. The Vine Street Victorian Showcase sounds like something I'd enjoy! I think people should follow their hearts and do whatever they feel like doing for Christmas. Too many folks get stressed out, trying to meet everyone else's expectations and schedules. To me, that defeats the meaning of Christmas. So good for you for doing it your own way! We had a non-traditional meal this year too. My husband made a huge pot of his delicious chili. We all loved it.

I think your Christmas sounds great. I wish your husbanded felt better. But there is nothing wrong with being quiet and staying home.
