Getting rid of expenses

United States
January 2, 2019 10:40am CST
Last month I canceled my slingtv. I only use it a few months out of the year, usually September - October or November. Yesterday I decided to cancel my kindle unlimited (book renting type service) subscription. I do use it but I have so many physical books that I need to read. I decided I would cancel my subscription and start reading those. Both of those combined saves me about $50.00 a month. I am sure you will see an influx of book review type discussions from me. Now it's on to getting rid of more things that aren't being used.

It's a good saving and you can buy something you need with $50.

I intend to put the extra savings towards my credit card bill.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am trying to save some little money every month. It makes a change at the end of the year.

@LadyDuck It certainly does. I am going to try to save money this year in many ways. 1 The acorn app, I want to try that out. I need to look into it more. 2 I have a "savingspig" which is an online bank that is set up for expenses / vacations. I want to save more in that. 3 My way2save which is a savings account that takes $1.00 out of every debit purchase you make. So if you make a $15.00 purchase, you technically are making a $16.00 purchase. 4 Loose change from selling things. I want to take the loose change from selling items and save it up. Then after so long a time I'll go to a coinstar and get an amazon giftcard with it.

That's a perfect way to start the year by saving Amber. I think I will do the same thing.

I did it last year as well. I like to try to start the year by getting rid of things I no longer need / want.

@JustBhem It makes all the difference. I feel like it helps start the new year right. I will sometimes rearrange my bedroom a bit as well.

I don't really spend a lot of money. But my husband could probably do away with the 3 cups of cappuccino he has a day. The doctor told him years ago to stop but he won't give them up. We could have saved a lot of money had he quit drinking those things from the corner store. Though I have been drinking a lot of Booster Juice smoothies lately, they are healthy for me.

It is hard to stop drinking coffee. I know because I used to drink it all the time (frozen frappucino's) and they are so unhealthy. They are especially unhealthy for women, or so I've heard. Maybe you could convince him to drink two a day. One in the morning and one in the evening. I need to start drinking more of my herbal teas, I've slacked off and it shows.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I have one cup of orange pekoe tea a day and then drink water all day long. Unfortunately my husband is going to do what he wants to do and no one, not even a doctor, can tell him otherwise.

@patgalca I drink water, blackberry ginger ale (obviously not healthy but I will drink it until they stop carrying it. It's a seasonal thing), raspberry leaf, lemon ginger and turmeric teas.

Yeah if you don’t use it should just get rid of it. We got rid of satellite television because they showed the same crap over and over

My friend has satellite. I can never find anything to watch when I'm at her house. I use netflix and mazon the most anyway. I'll miss kindle unlimited but I need to read the books I have. I will have a long "to be read" once I re-subscribe to KU.

@Courage7 That is not good, you need your nourishment. Is there anything you could sell? Or a service you could be rendering to help you get caught back up? A few years ago there was a forum that specialized in debt consolidation. The people who ran the forum paid for posts including just general nonsense posts. The forum itself was about debt but their aim was to help those in debt. I believe the forum was an experiment of sorts as they had stated they were only going to pay for a few months. I think I may have earned $12.00 from them.

We had sling and dropped it as it was for hubby for sports. He said to do it. I am keeping Amazon Prime as I use it for the shipping. Our television is a ROKU set and hubby finds lots of things he likes to watch. I do not watch television. I own books, libraries own books. There is an app called Reader Coin that is supposed to pay you to read/listen to books. Not sure how much of a selection they have or details about how they pay, I am just enjoying a book I had read years ago.

I have hard of readercoin but I believe it only pays cents on the dollar. There's a sister app for podcasts as well. I will have to get slingtv again when baseball season starts. My grandfather uses my sling to watch the after shows of his favorite team. I used it for the DVR, but I don't do much watching to television. Sling is still my favorite "Cable cutting" service though.

Looking forward to your book reviews (you know I love to read and am always looking for a good book) I never subscribed to Kindle unlimited for the same reason...I have too many physical books to read rather than paying a monthly subscription.

I've gotten these physical books over the past several months. I think I might schedule out a day that I post a book review. I need to finish reading a Simone St. James book and give it a review. That way it holds me accountable for reading and gives me an outlet to express what I thought of the book. Win - Win - Win as I love discussing books with people here.

Currently I don't have a tv, internet provider of my own or any other subscription to anything. I'm going the opposite way in 2019 and am looking for my own internet service as my landlords wifi (free for me) just doesn't work that well considering the size of our building.

No way to just get a signal booster? We have to use one here. The modem is in the back of the house and my bedroom is at the front. The signal booster sits in a bathroom in the middle of the house.
