Long Time No See

New Year and new me - or rather after newly 'redundant' me. Which for those of you who don't know the term, means my job disappeared in yet another company reorganisation (I think we were running at a rate of 3-4 per year - a technique often known as 'rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic'). So as of a couple of days ago, I don't have a job. I've had time to get used to it - they told me on the first working day of December - and I don't have to panic as they paid me a lot of money to shuffle off quietly and not kick up a stink. But I find myself in the odd position of not working. I've been out of work for about 3 days in the past 27 years so this still has novelty value. I renewed my library card and have been reading like a demon. I visit my neighbour's red CockerPoo, Ralph, and throw balls around the garden for him most mornings. I cook food that's ready when my lovely husband walks through the door - heck, I even cleared the ironing backlog. But now the tough stuff starts. Time to decide whether I want to climb back onto the rollercoaster that just threw me off, or do something different entirely. And since I have some time on my hands and have found that playing Facebook Scrabble during the day isn't as much fun as when you're SUPPOSED to be working, I thought I'd better pop back and see what's going on over at myLot. So what did I miss?

Hello, I am so glad you are back. Sorry you are without a job now, but you can take some relaxing time and then decide if you want to ride again the roller coaster. No big news here.

My guess is probably not too much - but last time I stayed away, I came back to find a lot of people had passed away whilst I was gone.

Oh, hello, what a nice surprise! I thought you had completely abandoned the shallowness of internet writing sites. What did you miss? Nothing much except my brill posts, of course. So no more visits to Bremen for you? That is sad. I do hope you'll find something satisfying. I've never been in such a situation as you are in now. I started my working life as a teacher and ended it as a teacher when the time for retirement had come.

I will miss Bremen - it's a super place - but quite honestly my working world seemed to be spiralling in and I was travelling less and less so I'd got used to not getting away so much.

Nice to see you but strangely not under these circumstances. Sorry to hear about your redundancy. I am retiring end of March I have had enough of the five hour commute. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I am here sporadically, so I can't say what you missed. Sorry about the job. Hopefully you will be one of the ones who finds something even better!

I did wonder what had prompted your return, now I know. Commiserations, but if you got "the package", well done! Take any retraining or reskilling courses on offer as part of that package, then start that hunt... You'll be back in the saddle in notime. Well, by May anyway.

@pgntwo No, it's having to happen now. The process of merging the contents of my 2 bed flat near work into my 4 bed house (which wasn't exactly empty) is already forcing a lot of sorting and throwing.

I'm reluctant to 'rush' things - struggling to get started to be honest. Enjoying a bit of leisure a bit too much.

Hello and happy new year! Funny I was just thinking about you yesterday (after reading an article about travelling in India) and what a shame we didn't hear from you any more. So I'm sorry you have no job but glad to see you here! Well, new year, time for a new start and all that. I imagine you might take up something totally different - what thoughts have you had so far?

Honestly I just haven't a clue. Most likely more of the same for 2-4 years and then hang up my wings and take a very early retirement. But for now I'm just enjoying some peace and every time I think of stuff that wasn't finished at work, I just tell myself "Not my problem any more".

Welcome back. I'm sorry you don't have a job. Doing the Titanic deck chair shuffle isn't easy. I have a publisher, had a deadline of December 31, and will have my next book published this year. That's my exciting news.

Nice to see you back and I hope you got a very good redundancy. It's pretty good being retired but you need to have plenty of activities/hobbies to indulge in if you're not of retiring age - or mind!
