Sometimes you need to watch your words

Can’t you just see this in your mind’s eye? A guy freaks out when he sees a spider. His screams cause his little daughter to start bellowing too. He repeatedly whacks at the spider screaming ‘why don’t you die’ at the top of his lungs. The neighbours hear all the carry-on, ring the police, and three squad cars rush to the scene by which time the poor spider has indeed succumbed. This is what happened to Rhys Howard of Perth, Western Australia, just a day or two ago. Apparently his partner usually deals with spiders but she was in the shower. The whole scenario sounds slightly familiar although Vince doesn’t get close enough to a spider to yell anything. Photo of a fight to the death between a redback spider and a centipede. The redback won.

This is a funny situation. My husband called me this morning to get rid of a spider. It was a little one, I grabbed it by one leg and threw out in the cold.

I don't usually touch them but put a glass over them then slide a piece of paper under them and take them outside.

This happened with a frog in our house, it was one of those shiny green ones which entered I don't know how.

@JudyEv I do this with small lizards. Those spiders with long legs are not dangerous and it's easy to grab one of their legs.

It is hard to fight fear. I have fear of toads when I was a kid (Okay, until Now).

Toads are pretty awful. I don't even like frogs much. You never know which way they are going to jump.

@JudyEv I'm not much afraid on regular frogs but for toads they hunts me even in my dreams.

I put a sheet of paper under a spider, let it crawl on it and then throw it out of the window. If there were no spiders, we'd all wade in insects.

Yep. I sometimes add a glass to your method. Wolf spiders are very quick. And somewhat venomous.

@TheHorse I use a glass as well. If the spider started coming towards my fingers on the paper he'd get dropped!

I'm like Vince. Thank goodness my mother, brothers, sons, and hubby have rescued me all these years from snakes and spiders. Bugs do not bother me.

@JudyEv I use the vacuum cleaner and spray Raid, a spider killer in it, if I have no other choice. Since Doodles has been with us, we've had very few spiders in the house.

I'm sure he'd manage if I wasn't nearby. Except for snakes. I don't think he would tackle them.

I did read that article the other day and it had me laughing. I am sure the police were amused as well. As for centipedes and spiders, ick to both.

@JudyEv I can imagine. But it will make for one hell of a story to tell many a time, and he will have proof he is not pulling anyone's leg as well.

Each of us has different fears. We could not just laugh it out because that guy was really scared. We can not prevent ourselves from being scared. I also have my own fears but I can not scream at the top of my lungs. However, I understand people who really scream.

@JudyEv Yes, I guess she had a hard time coping with her fears. You know, some of our boardmates laughed at her because according to them it was an act of a little child. But I believed her.

I looked closely at the photo and wondered who would win. I assume the redback is similar to our black widow. Perhaps the venom is chemically similar as well. I have no problem with spiders. I've removed a few wolf spiders that had colleagues on their desks. I use the upside-down glass and cardboard method. As for reactions, children learn what their parents do.

I think the spider won but when I went back later there was nothing there so perhaps a bird came along and took both. He'd want to know what he was doing tackling those two.

At work if we have spiders or wasps etc in the classroom I try to get it out calmly as I am in front of the children ….at home although I try to get them out carefully ….they don't always make it …...

We were always told its bite was fatal but apparently that isn't so. The bite is very painful and can make you very sick but it seems it doesn't often kill. Nevertheless Aussies never take any chances with redbacks.
