The nurse made a big mistake

I have written other discussions about the home health care team that takes care of my mother-in-law. They have made mistakes in the past like forgetting to visit to her when they said they would, but this time something worse happened. My mother-law-in had a fall in her home. She called her nurse and the nurse looked at her and said: "It is not necessary to call a doctor, you just need to relax and take some painkillers" Later that day my mother-in-law called my husband. She was in tremendous pain, she could hardly move or speak. We called an ambulance, and when she got to the hospital they discovered she had 3 broken ribs in addition to the other health problems she already had. One day later she got pneumonia and she ended up in intensive care. She is doing much better now. She is still at the hospital, but not in intensive care. This time we are writing complaint about that nurse.

You must write a complain about that nurse to avoid that she can cause problems to other people. I hope your mother in law feels a bit better now.

Yes, we definitely going to write a complaint. We talked to my brother-in-law, he also wants to complain and we are probably going to write it together. I don't think that the nurse is competent. It is risky to let her take care of vulnerable clients. My mother-in-law is still at the hospital, but she is doing much better. She will probably leave the hospital in a few days.

@LadyDuck The problem is that most of those complaints don't change a lot. In most cases the nurse will get a warning and they will tell her "to be more careful in the future" We are still going to write the complaint of course, but very few of those cases has serious consequences for the nurse involved. I personally think that she should be fired.

@Porcospino The nurse is extremely dangerous, imagine those patients who are unable to complain and to call their families. She must be stopped to visit people.

I hope that that ´nurse´ did not cause those injuries on top of being incompetent. I would be FURIOUS!! Here is praying for your poor Mother in law.

Thank you. We were all very angry when we discovered what happened. There have been problems before, but this time it is worse. Incompetent is the right word. She really should have called a doctor.

When an older person falls they should always be seen by a doctor. Falls can be symptoms of infections and other problems. It is not a good thing to have a nurse dismiss the seriousness of a fall.

Exactly. That is the reason why we are worried about the things that could happen if the nurse continues to take care of the clients. She didn't take it serious at all.

Oh wow, yes, that nurse should not be in the healthcare field. Anybody with common sense would know that there could have been internal bleeding or other things that don't automatically show up.

Yes, that is the thing I don't understand. I mean, I don't understand why she didn't ask a doctor to examine my mother-in-law. She should have been to the hospital in the morning and not in the afternoon when she was in so much pain.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, exactly. I would have asked a doctor to examine her if I had been that nurse. My mother-in-law is usually a woman who doesn't complain much, but she was in so much pain when we called the ambulance. She could hardly move without pain.

@Porcospino I think the nurse was probably either incompetent or just lazy. She should have known that you can never be too careful with elderly who fall. Your mother in law could have had incurred much worse damage to her body.

Yes, exactly. She had broken ribs and she needed medical treatment not painkillers, but the nurse didn't think that it was necessary to ask a doctor.

I also think that it is horrible that the nurse didn't take things seriously. My mother-in-law is still at the hospital, but she is doing much better now and she is no longer in intensive care. She will probably stay in the hospital a few more days.

@Nevena83 When she comes back to her home the home health care team will take care of her again. Hopefully that nurse won't be a part of the team who helps in her home. We don't trust that nurse at all.

That is exactly what I thought. It is really irresponsible of her. We are writing a complaint about her.

That is what we are thinking. We don't want that nurse to take care of her in the future. We are going to write a complaint. Maybe the nurse will just get a warning, but we want the home healthcare team to know that we don't think that it is acceptable.

That is a very serious mistake. It is lucky that she is now recovering.

Yes, it is a very serious mistake. We were very worried about my mother-in-law. Fortunately the ambulance came extremely fast, but we are angry about the nurse who didn't take things seriously. I am very happy that my mother-in-law is recovering now.
