Question For Today: Winter Car Preparations

For some of us it's that time again. Time to prepare ourselves for that frigid winter weather. Dressing warm, winterizing our homes, and making sure the cars we own are also winterproofed. Which leads me to today's question. What kinds of preventive measures do you consider important in getting your car ready for winter's cold temperatures, ice and snow storms? Do you have any kind of maintenance list ready to lessen your chance of your vehicle breaking down this winter? Source- AAA World Photo- automasters.com

I recently did an oil change, so I believe my car is ready, especially since I'm dealing with this weather and it's doing fine.

@dgobucks226 Yes, it would. I had my oil changed not too long ago. I don't do a lot of traveling, so it takes longer to get to the mileage requirement for the oil change. They also took care of all my fluids.

@just4him Your set to go! Speaking of oil changes, I've got my car appointment tomorrow, lol.

I have the antifreeze checked, the tires checked, and I put enough clothes in the car (in case it breaks down) to start my own consignment shop. I also have a mummy sleeping bag in there for good measure.

Now that's winter car prep! You definitely go the extra mile (pardon the pun) with the mummy sleeping bag, lol.

@dgobucks226 — yeah because you never know when you’ll see a mummy hitchhiking.

We switch the tires in late October, we have snow tires right now. When we go to the garage to switch the tires, they take care of the winter maintenance.

@dgobucks226 We have a small emergency kit in the car, but the important things are the snow tires because in the north of Italy it's mandatory to have snow tires in winter and we often cross the border.

I make sure to rotate my tires for the winter season. A good service garage will check things like the battery, antifreeze, wiper blades, washer fluids. I also have an emergency item like a flashlight and jumper cables in my car just in case.

@dgobucks226 It has been a long time that I had a car in winter but you have to make sure the heater works and something on your tires so you do not get stuck as what I remember.

Yes, good tires are really important for traction. And to be stuck without a heater would be terrible Also a battery that is not to old and needs replacing!

@dgobucks226 Yes for sure. That is one thing you habe to have because on those cold winter mornings your car won't start without a good battery

Good and helpful topic. To be honest I don't really do much, other than keep up with oil changes, keep an eye on my tires / air pressure, allow the car to warm up a bit before driving, and when bitterly cold, driving very slowly for the first few miles to allow the underpinnings of the car to loosen up

@dgobucks226 So true, it's my least favorite thing, but important. Good hint about the wiper blades. I know I need new ones, because I got overly energetic chipping ice off my windshield..... something else to buy when I get my oil changed next.

Keeping those tires in check is very important Driving on underinflated tires will wear them out faster making them succeptible to skidding. Here is another helpful hint- Wiper Blades: check them for wear which will cause window streaking if they need to be replaced. Don't clear ice and frost with the blades. Cold weather will damage them over time so if these conditions occur replace the blades.

I don't have a car now but when I did, I always made sure my tires were in good shape and had special snow tires. I also changed my oil in October and that's about it.

@dgobucks226 True! However, I am exposed to the elements a lot when walking and I have to have good boots and other warm clothing.

Proper tire care is very important during wintertime to avoid skidding on snowy roads. With no car you no longer have those winter prep worries
