They are Coming for Me

I got a message from the IRS on my phone yesterday. I am guilty of tax evasion and fraud. If I don't call the number, it proves that I am guilty and they will come for me. I deleted the message. Should I be afraid? What kind of scam calls have you been getting? Are the IRS or the internet police after you?

@JohnRoberts What always surprises me is that Nigeria is a VERY POOR COUNTRY even if it is the richest country in Africa. The richest man there is Aliko Dangote, worth about $21 billion. But he is very much alive. I wonder how many people actually fall for this.

I have gotten a call from the IRS before. I mean a scammy one. I've gotten letters talking about rebates on car parts when I don't even own a car. People will try anything to scam the unaware, won't they?

I get the car warranty calls. They are for cars we owned years ago or never owned. The IRS does not contact people by phone out of the blue.

I retired from the IRS. No agent, officer etc will call anyone demanding payment or make threats. The only time calls are made are when official letters went out and the person called the official IRS number and gives a phone number with permission to call back. The letters are on official letterhead with employee ID's etc. What's sad is these scams continue because there are people who believe it and give their credit card numbers, wire money etc.

I get IRS letters all the time in my email. Also, from the FBI, Homeland Security, President Trump, Mrs. Obama, the CIA, and so forth. They are all investigating me for something. I was getting fines imposed from violations in Minecraft which I never played. It is relentless.

I hate those phone calls. They make you out to be a criminal. Hanging up on them is the right thing to do. I hope you shredded the evidence for when they come to get you. If you need someone to testify on your behalf, let me know.

The shutdown is a disaster for these IRS scammers, otherwise you would be perhaps looking for a good lawyer now. The only scammers I get times to times are silent, they hang up very quickly with the hope that I will call back a premium rate number, often in a foreign country.

Yeah, that would be bad. They charge a lot for those calls you make to claim your cash or pay your bill. Someone told me he was supposed to pay his taxes with $8,000 worth of iTune cards.

@akalinus I don't blame him! I don't want my bed to shout at me either. Last night my roof over my bed boomed at me....we had thunder storms for a couple hours. I did finally managed to fall asleep. We had down pours for a few hours during the thunderstorms. Bill went up to feed the cats and they both were curled up in the shed next to each other enjoying the warmth from the other's body. I need to get the blanket up there for them to curl up in during the storms we're supposed to have for the next few days.

I had someone who claimed to be from VA Loans call me today. I had to ask twice who was calling before they would tell me who they were. Number One sign that you're a scammer! Earlier today someone called asking for my husband (I think it was the VA scammers). When I asked who was calling, they asked if I was him. I asked again who was calling and they hung up. Hmmmm...that's what I thought!

Some guy tried to sell me a phone online one time. He asked for a down payment first and he was totally evasive with the details. I have some experience in scam detection and it amazes me how easy people fall for some of the obvious tricks. I could give mqny examples of scams, but it would take too long. Scammers are very inventive .

@akalinus no, not a phone number, he was selling an iPhone. He sent some pictures, but I asked him to show me a picture with the phone and a paper with the current date written on it. He couldn't do that .
