Childhood Memory - The Fractured Wrist

When I was about 11 years old, I had fractured my right wrist. As my mom had left to the store while I was doing something in the house, and when I found out I ran outside to catch up with her to go too.. and I tripped over a crack in the sidewalk and landed on my arm. Of course my mom heard my loud mouth screaming, and came running to me. She brought me into the house, gave me ice, and called the doctors; to see if they wanted her to bring me there or to the hospital. And because I quickly got swollen, they said to go to the hospital. So we did, and I was given a sling and wrap after xrays were done. About a week later, my whole right arm was put into a cast. And was left like that for about 3-6 months (least I don't remember it being longer than that). Which made school work hard to do, especially the writing papers part in Language Arts, being that I'm a righty. Although, my teacher did allow me to use my Great-Grandmothers type writer for homework, as we had a computer but not a printer at the time, but that was still tough to use at times too.. I also had a hard time with taking baths, and getting my hair washed and brushed. So of course my mom had to help with all of that. Plus! Was my arm ever so itchy! So when it came time, I was so happy to finally get that cast off! Although I was also afraid to too. As the saw tool the doctor had kind of freaked me out, thinking it was going to go down to my skin. Which made it hard for him to get the cast off . But he eventually did get it off, and the first thing I did after was shake his hand. And although he said to be careful for now on, as it won't take much to break it again, I thankfully have never hurt my wrist again, or broke any other part of my body at that. Though I'm sure I've come close fooling around with all these crazy kids!

@Courtlynn It is scary as we know how quickly something like that can cut.

That sounds like quite a long time to have a cast on, I would imagine that there are so many things that we take for granted that you couldn't do while it was on. I've never broken any bones, except for some vertebrae in my back.

Eh not really, just the bathing and writing / typing. Plus nowadays it'd be cooking, and maybe painting. Im glad you never have. Besides that in your back.

Someone told me that the bones heal stronger after but that didn't make much sense to me. I have broken my tailbone twice but thats it. I wonder why you were in a sling for a week before they put it in a cast. Seems like it should have been put in a cast right away.

@Courtlynn sometimes they wait a bit for the swelling to go down I think but eek if you had to wait a week because there were no openings that's awful.

couldn't really, with pen or pencil. typing wasn't too easy either, but better with the finger tips.

I'm sorry you broke your wrist and it was in a cast for six months. That's a long time to be in a cast. The most I've been in a cast was six weeks. I broke my elbow at ten, and my right ankle in 2010 and my left leg in 2015, though that one didn't have a cast. I was in the nursing home for a month with therapy because the break was just under the knee and in a bad place for a cast. I've also had broken ribs. I'm glad that was your only break. I'm sorry you were in a cast for so long.

It might not have been that long, but it was over 12 years ago, so I don't really remember. just know if felt like a long time, at the time. Sorry you've had so many breaks.

@Courtlynn It does seem like a long time to a kid. It seemed like my elbow was in a cast for the entire summer. It probably wasn't.

I've never broken any bones, thank goodness. I've seen people itching like crazy from their casts. Just be careful of your wrist.
