I have two faithful online friends who I got to know on other sites. Some years ago when they heard that I had to go to hospital for an operation they sent me three flip flop flowers to comfort me. Thank you again, B. and F! They come in ball shaped, coloured plastic pots which are about five cm high. The top is flat and black thus giving the illusion of soil. In the middle is a narrow rectangular opening of about 2 cm out of which two green leaves and a green stem with a coloured blossom at the end ‘grow’. Parallel to this opening is another one covered by a translucent piece of plastic. Underneath is the solar cell which gives the flower ‘life’. The advantage of flip flap flowers over real life plants is: they’re completely maintenance free. No water, no earth, no care. They don’t need batteries. The solar cells don’t have to be recharged. A bit of sunshine or artificial light from a lamp are enough to make the leaves move up and down and the stem from side to side. The more light, the more pronounced the movement. A flip flap flower makes no noise and doesn’t pollute the environment with emissions. It’s just nice to have and you can’t help getting into a positive mood looking at the gently swaying leaves and blossom. It can stand anywhere, of course, but good places are a desk or a window sill. You can order flip flap flowers from Amazon, for example. One flower on Amazon USA is $2.98 on the day of writing. These combinations are available: red (with a reddish flower) / orange (with a white flower) / green (with a white flower / blue (with a reddish flower) / pink (with a white flower). But it‘s not possible to order certain colours. They are packed at random. So there‘s always a surprise involved, too.

Thanks for your comment. I haven't noticed you around for some time. I'm probably always already in bed when you become active.

@MALUSE Yeah, I usually don't come on until about 9:30 am (CST) to about 11 am. The rest of the day I spend taking surveys to try to make some money. I know that sounds pathetic but it's all I can do.

@porwest We don't manufacture much any more. It seems everything comes from China although occasionally stuff comes from other countries too.

In the United States they are everywhere @JudyEv. BUT not a single one is made in the United States. lol. Helping the Chinese one flip-flap plant at a time, and I see them everywhere. SOMEONE is making a fortune on these.

If you need to cheer someone up, they're a welcome (and cheap) present.

Fab. I hope they're still flipping and flapping after all these years. Mine always make me smile but some have been destroyed by over enthusiastic cats.

Hah, so you realised who B. and F. are! Funny that I decided to post this text today when you decided to pay myLot a visit. Sadly, F. has disappeared completely from the radar.

@MALUSE Of course I knew. Who else would have bought you dancing flowers? I don't know if I ever told you that my first one came from a friend in Holland and I've bought them for a couple of other people as post surgery cheer ups.

Flip Flap Flowers!! Try saying that after a few drinks! I've just noticed your location. What takes you to Uzbekistan?

An aeroplane will take me there in May! :-) I'm going with a travel organisation. I've had the wish to see Uzbekistan since I was ten years old and learnt about the country - then still one of the 15 Soviet Republics - at school in the GDR (German Democratic Republic). Uzbekistan lies on the famous Silk Road and has the most beautiful Islamic architecture of the world.

@maluse Excellent idea if you have no aptitude for keeping house plants alive.

The 'aptitude for keeping house plants alive' is called 'having a green thumb' in German.Do you also have this expression in English?

This product was quite popular many year ago in my place. They are placed mostly on car dashboard. because sun can reached them easily. It's fun looking at them sway here and there. But in my place where the heat of the sun can sometimes be scorching hot I've seen some of them literally melt when left inside a car under direct sunlight.

@MALUSE lol that’s true. That’s why it’s popularity waned in my place because of that. They usually would sway here and there but then when exposed to direct sunlight they would froze because they melt the moving parts

Oh dear. A melted plastic pot with a plastic flower can't be a nice sight.

I had these at work and would enjoy watching them on my window sills. When I retired, I gave them to a co worker that liked them and was going to replace but haven't yet. They have some fun animal ones too.

You could order one or two (or three) and give them to your wife as a present. I don't understand that you see something which pleases you as a 'waste'.

@MALUSE I don't like spending money, and when I do spend money, I prefer to spend it on something useful. That being said, if it made my wife smile, I SUPPOSE that would be useful.
