Yesterday my husband and I drove from one side of New Zealand's North Island to the other, to spend time with a long-standing friend over there. The drive is just over two hours, so a reasonable distance for a return day trip. We love the Hawke's Bay region, sometimes known as the sunshine province. As well as great weather it is best known for being one of our country's major fruit and wine producing regions. We didn't have time to visit any vineyards yesterday, but we did come home with lots of wonderful freshly picked, inexpensive fruit. So, now my fruit bowl is filled with apricots, plums, nectarines and cherries. I love summer fruits such as these. Cherries and apricots are my favourites. Which summer fruits do you enjoy most when they are in season? Photo from the Pixabay site

The weird weather has meant there aren't many peaches around this year. Is the Aussie heat wave affecting you?

@JudyEv I remember trying to cope with 42 in Melbourne a few years back, that was bad enough!

@valmnz No, it's just pleasantly warm. Did you hear it was 52C in Port Augusta? 52!!! I'd melt I think.

Apricots grow in Switzerland and they are my favorite summer fruits. Cherry season is so short, while apricots last for almost two months.

@valmnz It is, the cherries are so expensive. My neighbor had a tree in the garden, the birds arrived to eat all the cherries before they were ripe.

I remember when we were on a package holiday in New Zealand the driver of our bus suggested that we stop by at a place where fresh fruit ice cream would be served then and there We only had to choose the fruits. It was a memorable experience.

We had a peach - or possibly apricot - tree in our garden but cut it down as all it ever did was drop stones on the greenhouse and break the glass or drop stones on the grass that got caught in the mower. We never got any fruit at all.

Having fresh fruit is awesome. My favorites are the berries, not cherries. Also peaches, oranges, apples - well, most fruits except cherries.

Even in summer our fruit is mainly imported from other provinces. Really enjoy peaches, cherries when they are in season in British Columbia.

We don't have a lot of fruit grown in my immediate region, but NZ is so small it comes in from all over the country.

Good healthy looking apples. When we lived further north we had five apple trees, as well as a peach tree and a lemon tree.

@valmnz When we lived in Africa in the 60/70s we had in our garden trees producing lemons, bananas, mangoes, apricots, pomegranates, guavas, papaya, peaches and a whole lot more - we didn't really appreciate them.

Our strawberry season was a bit of a disaster this year because of the weather. The strawberries we eat here are grown nearby on the west coast, the fruit we bought was on the west coast.
