Should The Vatican Allow Priests To Get Married?

This morning I was reading a local tabloid of which front page shows a photo of a priest being charged of sex assault. He was arrested the other day for sexually assaulting a woman more than six years ago. When I was a kid, it was my dream to become a priest. So, after graduating from the elementary grades, I enrolled in a Catholic Seminary. But before completing a college degree, I decided to quit. I believed I could not keep the "vow of celibacy". Some contemporaries and a classmate in the seminary, who got ordained, had girlfriends. They eventually left the priesthood to start a family. There are priests, who opt not leave the priesthood; but some of them could not "suppress" their fatal attraction to beautiful women (Who does, anyway? Just kidding!) - - like this priest. Without too much ado - - SHOULD PRIESTS BE ALLOWED TO MARRY A WIFE OF THEIR OWN? I say yes!

I think it is simply very unnatural to make priests vow to be celibate.

@JudyEv So, what do you think why the Vatican does not allow priests to get married?

@antonbunot I suppose it's come down over hundreds of years and someone way back interpreted the Bible as saying priests should be celibate. But you can find arguments of just about anything in the Bible. It's the humans who interpret the Bible that are the problem. They read into it what they want to read into it.

@antonbunot The wife of a priest would need to be a very special person but other religions have married ministers/priests and you don't hear of them running amok too often.

Celibacy is a personal choice as well as a gift and should never be forced upon, however traditions and rules should also be respected, once you enter an institution or a relgion in this case then be ready to follow otherwise get out and do as you please. I'm just showing both sides of the coin and btw I am not Catholic but got my education in Catholic schools.

I agree that celibacy is a choice . . I think the Vatican does not want priests to have a family . . to save money!

@antonbunot hahaha...do you mean as in spending church collection for their personal needs? The problem is because their churches are centralized and they need to remit I think whereas Christian pastors enjoy some sort of independence with tithes.

@db20747 like the diocesan priests! It would be unfair for the priests of different orders .. like the SVD missionaries. I am sure most if not all long to have a wife, too. LOL

Well, I may not be the right person to comment on this, but I believe every one who wants to marry should be free to marry.. It is natural for people to get married.. The earth would come to an end if no one married.. that is how nature is..

And God's message is - - GO ON EARTH AND MULTIPLY! Meaning you don't need to get married first before you multiply or even just add!

I don't think it is the community or parishioners who should decide . . it is the pope or Vatican.
