To ease congestion the Metro is being built several feet below the city of Mumbai. I was just imagining digging tunnels under Malls, churches mosques the works. I came across a page on the Net describing the horrors the workers down below have to face in that claustrophobic environment Here is an extract of that article We came, we saw, we marvelled, we returned. My whole experience underground was physically disturbing. I looked at the faces of the workers we passed and wondered how they endured it all for eight hours every day. It was like working in a mine with all the claustrophobia and the mental tension that it evokes. Though our visit was not physically exhausting by any means, I felt tired and sick from the exposure. Thankfully, no accident had taken place during my time ‘underground’, but I promised myself that never again would I descend “to the centre of the earth You can read the full article here:
A new solution for Mumbai’s commuting chaos, the Metro, is being built several feet beneath the city. Five citizens explored this subterranean world where machi

Imagine doing this well over 100 years ago when the London and Paris underground systems were built. Isuspect it is much safer now than it was back then.

@allknowing The channel tunnel is fairly recent and achieved using modern technology and machinery. I'm talking about the Paris Metro and The London Underground which were both constructed in the 19th Century.

They had to stop and change the path several times in Rome because, digging, they discovered hidden treasures. Ancient Roman palaces, catacombs, mosaics. It happened the same in Milan.

@allknowing I have visited Pompeii twice and I would love to go again. You learn so much about the life at the time of ancient Romans.

In Delhi too same thing is going on. Metro completed many places and still making is on the way. But here in Delhi you can see metro rail on top of your head too. There are so many names, like pink line, yellow line, red line etc, which I could not understand the difference completely. However, the charges are too high. In bus, with the one side charge of metro, I can travel both sides. Yes, there is time difference for sure.

The people who work in that underground are very very brave and hard working people to say the least, a different breed if I might say. I would be afraid to do so.
