How many courses can you eat?

While chatting with Loretta (@noni1959) on her discussion http://www.mylot.com/post/3243842/ice-cream-and-dressing I mentioned that when I go out, and before ordering my meal, I always check out what desserts are on offer. We rarely have dessert at home but I do love them. I can’t eat a huge amount and when we dine out, usually one course is enough for me. If there are several dishes which I’d really like to try I might have two entrees but if there a yummy dessert on offer, I’ll just have an entrée or perhaps a main and hope I have room for dessert. I also remember some good advice that I read once. You really never know when you might be called to heaven (or the opposite) so you should always eat your dessert first, just in case you die before you have the chance. I think the waiter might be a bit flummoxed if I started off with dessert but it’s always on my mind. So I’m wondering if anyone else checks out the dessert menu before ordering their meal.

I check the desserts first, I can only eat very little, so I check to know if I have to eat something light to be able to order the dessert.

Even if I have a small first course, sometimes I still don't have room for dessert.

@ladyduck I had the most wonderful cannoli for dessert today. I was at the restaurant ‘Coppi’ and you are correct, it is named after the Italian cyclist as you asked last time I mentioned it. It says so on the menu. Main course was pork scaloppine with calamari to start with and a very good Sangiovese to drink. I don’t usually drink Sangiovese but this was very good.

Sometimes the desserts aren't very special but other times they might have really delicious ones on the menu.

@hereandthere We did that in Singapore. Our couch-surfer friends took us to a restaurant they knew about.

I sometimes wonder why one cannot eat desserts before starting a meal. You guessed it right I love desserts and check before ordering. I skip the soup

I like soup too. Sometimes I'll have soup then dessert. It depends on what's on offer.

@judyev Desserts here are usually of inferior quality, lazily thought out and created without care, imagination or verve, pre-made and stuck in the freezer till they’re needed. They are quite often spelled incorrectly as well and I can never bring myself to enjoy misspelled food. Saying that I’m headed for an amaretto panna cotta this lunch time in my current favourite restaurant

That's funny, I'm with you on the misspelled food! I have never been able to bring myself to even try a Krispy Kreme doughnut!!

I never worried about the sweet until the end of the meal, but nowadays I don't bother with the desserts - far too much sugar

We don't have them at home because of Vince's diabetes but if they have something really nice when we're out I like to have it.

@changjiangzhibin89 We always have ice-cream in the freezer in case we have unexpected guests for dinner but we don't normally have it if there is just the two of us.

I don't have a problem with blood sugar either but Vince does. At home we rarely have dessert which is why I like to have it if I'm out.

Yes I always do that and that I can have two serving of the dessert even if it meant that I give up on my main course

Yes I do, I often don't bother with dessert but if there's a particular favourite then I try to save space. Don't often succeed though! One year we all went to a country pub for a meal on my birthday. They had lots of nice things but I didn't have room for two courses, but luckily it was a place that served food almost all day, so we all had lunch, then we went for a riverside walk for a couple of hours, then we went back and had dessert. That was a treat!

@JudyEv I have slowed down a bit as I've got older. I used to be able to handle two desserts. Probably still could but I suspect my waistline wouldn't thank me!!

@WorDazza I could still handle two desserts but that would be it. I'd have no room for anything else. Don't worry about your waistline. You could always wear braces.

I've become a bit more prudent with old age. I used to go the whole hog (pardon the pun) and go home barely able to walk but now I have a bit more sense. But good for you if you're able to have heaps of courses. A great way to go.

If it's on the table or included with the menus, yes, always. Even though I know it isn't part of my diet program. There's no harm in looking.

If you choose carefully you are able to have two courses and not feel as though you've over-eaten.

I´m not fond of sweets so I always check on wonderful appetizers when I go out. They are usually dishes that I don´t cook at home do I ask those. Sometimes, when I go out, I ask for an extra spoon to steal a bit of one of my friend´s desserts

it varies for me - lots of smaller courses rather than giant plates full - I hate how some people show off at all you can eat buffets by eating ridiculous amounts and trying to keep going after everyone else has ate enough
