Continuing my ponderings about common nursery rhymes, I'm still trying to figure out what the writer was thinking when he wrote Jack and Jill.
In what way is glorifying a couple who go up a hill to fetch water (wasn't there water at the bottom of the hill) and then adding a cruel, violent twist to make Jack break is head , suitable for kids to enjoy. The abrupt end to the rhyme means no-one knows what happened to Jill after she tumbled down the hill. And no-one has solved that mystery for centuries!!

This was a story about Maria Antoninette and King Louie. King Louie was guillotined first and then Maria Antoinette next.

Most fairy tales have a hidden meaning and many of them are very gruesome and gory!

@ThreeTeddies while the stories behind them are eerie, what worries me is the rather violent and deadly themes some of them portray!

@pitstop Most kids wouldn't know the hidden stories behind nursery rhymes. In fact, most adults probably don't know either but most of them have evolved from very dark tales indeed!
