I did this preciously twice..one time as a young teen where I was unlucky enough to run into my mother..who was furious of course and turned me into my dad, whereas I conconcted some kind of story as to why I was forced to do this..Stupid girl..and another time in college, when I was late for class. I knew better then of course, but I chose a ride with some one who had lots of business information on his vehicle so I knew he would be easily tracked and unlikely a killer of some sort. I just watched something on the ID channel, about a young girl hitching in a snowstorm who was murdered..a college student, who really should have known better and was warned not to, by her parents. Although, my ex hitchhiked all through the British Isles in the 60's with no problem. Different time, different place, plus he was male.

Yes, unfortunately we as women are more likely to have things happen to us. I've never hitchhiked, however, I have picked up a hitchhiker with friends. It all ended up being okay. Actually, you remind me of a more recent time. This wasn't a hitchhiker though.
About two years ago, a friend was picking me up, I had a lot of bags in the back because I was staying at her house for a week (it ended up being a month) and we came across a guy on a motorcycle who had broken down. We also had one of her dogs with us. She had me get in the back seat with her dog and let him get in the front. He was a really nice guy, a family man, and his wife is a lucky lady because he was rather good looking.
The previous time I mentioned earlier? We were teenagers and the guy ended up being pretty cool.
I have never hitchhiked myself. There was once when I was forced to walk to work as my family wasn't back yet. I was nearly at work when my grandmother came rolling up beside me and told me to get in the car. She wasn't mad at me for walking, but concerned that I was walking.

Well walking and hitchhiking are two different things. Glad everything worked out well with your situations.

It's a bit safer for males I think.

@snowy22315 I think so too. It isn't recommended here but some still do it.

I did my share of hitchhiking back in the day and have a few stories I could tell if I ever decided to. But I'll tell ya anybody hitchhiking needs to be on their toes and carry some form of protection.

@snowy22315 I've picked up a few. If my instincts tell me to I do. If they say don't I don't. If my instincts are quite I don't.

Those were more innocent times. Now even if we want to we are wary of giving lifts.

@Nevena83 You are making yourself very vulnerable to do that.

I can't imagine how mad your mom was. I guess I sort of hitchhiked. Both times my car had broken down. I didn't try to wave anyone down, but once a lady with her kid stopped, and I obviously trusted a little woman with a toddler. The other time a guy in an electric company truck stopped an offered me a lift. I hoped killing me in a company truck was taboo. That was before I had a cell phone, and I was under twenty.

I have not, and never would. Have always thought of it as dangerous.

Honestly, I would have been a little surprised if you had said you did.
