Our new wall unit is made of marri

I wrote recently that friends are giving us a wall unit made of marri or redgum, a West Australian timber which has a very lovely grain. I don’t have a photo of it and we won’t be getting it until their house sells which could be some weeks at least and quite likely some months. However I did find a photo of a table made of the same timber so I can show you the attractive grain of the wood. The botanical name for the marri is Corymbia calophyalla, also known as Eucalyptus calophyalla. Along with other species it is known as a 'bloodwood' as a mass of dark red gum appears wherever the tree is damaged in some way. It has large buds and fruit. The gumnuts are known to us as honky nuts. Back in 2016 I wrote about red, white and blue gums. When I go back over my old posts I’m surprised by some, many of which I have no recollection of writing. If you missed it and want to read a bit more about our gum trees, the link is
Isn't it strange sometimes how stuff you've grown up with doesn't make an impact until one day it hits you between the eyes? It's only today I've realised...

@JudyEv is that hardwood? the ones that are termite-resistant?

@hereandthere It is a hardwood but not resistant to termites.

When the wood is so beautiful, it certainly doesn't need a cloth covering it.

They have priced it competitively but no houses are selling quickly here at the moment.

I can see why @JudyEv I do feel sorry for the tree however, I personally will go with a vinyl covering instead of real wood.

@rebelann Fair enough. One things about marri is that it grows easily. On land cleared for cropping but then left to regenerate, the majority of new trees will be marri.

@JudyEv We bought some new furniture and an area rug. I wish I had taken a photo of it, too. I forgot what colors were in the rug.

The grain is beautiful isn't it? It reminds me of Tasmanian sassafras which is a totally different wood to the US timber of the same name. These salt and pepper shakers are of sassafras.
