Flashback 20 years ago: Billboard's Top 10 Songs of 1999

In 1999, I was still exclusively listening to alternative music and radio meaning I was basically oblivious to the big hits dominating pop radio and sales. There was little crossover. Perusing the top 10 hits of 1999 reveals my musical ignorance. Only two of these played on alternative radio. Four songs I am familiar with. The remaining four I am clueless about even 20 years later. Mainstream popular was not in my vocabulary. “Livin’ La Vida Loca” Ricky Martin: There was no escaping this song. Not played on alternative radio but in your face everywhere else no matter how hard you tried to avoid it. The high point of Martin’s brief stardom. “Nobody’s Supposed to be Here” Deborah Cox: Never heard of the song or singer. “Every Morning” Sugar Ray: Believe it or not, SugarRay was big for awhile on alternative radio despite being rather “soft.” “Genie in a Bottle” Christina Aguilera: Even I have seen the video. Didn’t she end up a judge on some talent show? “Kiss” Sixpence None the Richer: Surprised the best song here ranked this high for the year. Even more surprised the band described as Christian rock. The song was played on alternative radio. “...Baby One More Time” Britney Spears: Groan. Another unavoidable video. Did you have Britneymania? “Heartbreak Hotel” Whiney Houston with Faith Evans and Kelly Price: Familiar with Whitney but not this song or the other singers. “Angel of Mine” Monica: Never heard of this song and Monica only sounds vaguely familiar. “No Scrubs” TLC: Same as #3. “Believe” Cher: Really? I know the song was popular but the biggest of the entire year? I thought Cher was done by then. How many of these songs do you like?

I saw Robbie Fulks do “Believe” one night at a concert. Infinitely better version than Cher’s. (Okay, that’s not difficult.) I could hear “Every Morning” once a month or so and enjoy it.

I like or at least can sing-a-long 7 of these songs. And I’m pretty sure if I listened to the others I must know them too. I think this is my era.

I like Cher's voice and though Believe wasn't my favorite, I did like it. I knew all except No Scrubs.

Groan. Those were 20 years ago. I don't like this game anymore. I like most of them, but I wouldn't call them favorites

I liked all of them at one point.. There was another one that came out of the 90's, I forget the name of the song or the singer but I know it's not listed here. It was a long, slow ballad. I've heard it recently and it brought me back to those years.

Do not remember too many of the 1999 songs. Much prefer the 60's and the 70's

That Sixpence None The Richer song did get a lot of airplay. I don't know that Whitney song and I don't even know who Deborah Cox is... Faith Evans is Biggie Smalls widow, and I only know that because of that memorial song they did for him with Puff Daddy (they changed the words to the Police's "Every Breath You Take").

Oh my God old great memories! Take me back to the 90's. I remember in 1999 I was just 7 years old, and I remember that most video music channels streamed "... Baby one more time", "Believe", "Living La vida loca" almost every single hour. I wonder why "I want it that way" By Backstreet Boys isn't in the ranking, being that BSB was huge that very same year with their album "Millennium" Oh pardon my excitement, you know 90's guys get a little excited about those days of ours!

I have always listened to classic rock, so I didn't have a lot of exposure to the top hits songs. I do remember being out at a dinner dance when they played the Ricky Martin song. Of course I had not ever heard of it before that night. When our son was a pre-teen he went thru the Brittany Spears thing, we were so glad that it was a short lived stint. The media really gave her a run for her money, and at times I used to feel sorry for her, the media did the same to Justin Beiber.
