Has organized religion failed us?

By now you've probably read about the kids from a Catholic High School who mocked and berated a Native American Vietnam War veteran.
My initial reaction was to want to smack that smug little b*stard standing intimidatingly close to the man singing and playing his drum.
But my inner religious person kicked in, and I realized I would rather have him come with me to an Indian Reservation and help build things, be it a lodge or a school.
How can human beings receiving a religious education mock and intimidate one whose ancestors were here 10,000 years before his, and who fought to protect our country, even if our country conquered his people?
What are your thoughts on this story?
In a joint statement, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School apologized and said they are investigating.

I hope the kid is expelled. Shame on the school and the chaperones for even bringing them to a Women's March. They clearly weren't going there for the right reasons. The kid's mother said that he was assaulted by "black Muslims" and that the Native American was intimidating the little punk with the drum. She defended his actions. That's why he has grown up to be such a racist, entitled little a-hole like she is.

Thanks for the info--I had not read that. I predict that only the one kid standing directly in front of the singer will be expelled. The others were doing what 14-year-olds do--trying to gain a feeling of power by mocking something they don't understand.

Not to mention the utter irony of those little creeps yelling "Build the wall!" to a Native American--the only one who ISN'T an immigrant. I agree with you--they need to do some serious community service on one of the many impoverished reservations.

@playertwo I'd rather see them do volunteer work with the Indians than do time in prison. Or "juvenile hall," as they call it here.

The religion has nothing to do with this behavior. Those bullies would be the same if they were Muslim or Orthodox or no matter what. The parents have failed here, not the religion. Anyway religions are only here to spread hate, not to help.

Charity begins at home, as the Christian saying goes. These kids were taught this behavior and it was encouraged.
Their chaperones need to be reprimanded as well.

@spiderdust Religious people condoning the mocking of a deeply spiritual man who served our Country? That doesn't make sense!

@TheHorse I've been wondering why their chaperones allowed this as well. The only answer I can come up with is that they condoned it, and possibly even encouraged it.

I saw this. Makes me shake my head and they still do not see the problem. Why would you want to do that? Its starting a beef with people who never start a beef. The only thing I can think of is they mad because Native Americans usually tell the truth and that goes against what they are trying to do.
Thanks for bible study though, been a while since did one of those. Lord I needed it. Pun intended.

@TheHorse Indeed, another thing that drives me crazy. You all preaching same thing just slightly different versions in the scheme of things. I do not get how this started so many wars if people took a step back, but as they say there is no logic in religion and politics.

@crossbones27 Perhaps they would figure out ways to help each other and to use the land responsibly, for the benefit of all. Nah, I'm just being a Poly Anna.

the MAGA hats seemed designed to suck out brain cells but then even putting one on suggests it has already done its work

Living not too far from the school (it's in Park Hills, Kentucky, a suburb of Cincinnati, about 100 miles up the road from me), I've been keeping an eye on this story. My outrage has only grown....over the fact that that is a completely fabricated story.
Cincinnati TV stations and newspapers have watched the entire two-hour video and have concluded that in context none of the things claimed ever happened.
Meanwhile, this formerly great nation of ours, which used to pride itself on "rule of law and order" and "innocent until proven guilty," has returned to the old KKK days of lynch mobs, using social media as the "judge and jury." There have been calls on Twitter for this student to be physically assaulted (with one musician promising autographed copies of all his albums to the person who "punches him in the (cashews, almonds, and pecans)").
The thing is that many people will believe this without ANY investigation of the facts simply because the kid was wearing a MAGA hat.
It's a lot like that misquote from Sister Souljah about "kill white people" back in 1992. That IS NOT, in context, what she said, but that's what everybody "thinks" she said because that's how it was reported.

@TheHorse — as Don Henley once sang, ee sides to every story: there’s your and there’s mine, and the cold hard truth.
My personal opinion: if the kid wasn’t wearing a Trump hat this would never have made news.

@FourWalls I disagree with you (about the Trump hate). But it does make the story fit the accepted narrative better. Standing that close to a man, and using the fixed stare, would seem designed to intimidate, or at least mock. What in the back story makes it seem more acceptable?

@wolfgirl569 Trump is a disgrace, but most small children have no idea who he is or what he represents.

@TheHorse @LadyDuck The boys are all in their puberty, the worst stage in the life of a male. Why is there no grown-up person in sight who could have ended this disgraceful situation? I'd punish the boy - ban him from coming to school for some weeks - and then send him to an Indian reservation for a prolonged time to do community work.

Unfortunately this is how our young are now being raised, I am Catholic but I will tell you, the kids that go to Catholic schools are no better than the ones that go to public schools. I used to know some of them and some are really terrible, I wondered why they were there. Kids these ages feel they are entitled, I am not sure to what but they need a good swift kick in their butts.

That is sad that there are still people who still could not understand that we can live peacefully with our neighbors despite the differences in our race, color and religion and so many things. It saddens me that they are Catholics because I know they are teaching unversal brotherhood with everyone Catholics and non Catholics alike.

When a pack of wolves are hungry, everything is either "something to eat" or "something that's blocking the food" ... even if you've 'trained' them to feign etiquette in order to get fed.

@TheHorse Similar to what happened at Jesus' 'Trial Before Pilate'---I'm sure the crowd of Jews were there just to see that 'the streets would be a little safer if they get rid of the criminals,' but the Priests stirred the crowd into a frenzy!

Highly disrespectful and demeaning the efforts of those who made sacrifices for the welfare of society putting their own lives at risk.
Obviously, a picture of an entitlement society that does not augur well.
Our political leaders set a bad example too by behaving in such a way anything goes - siva

What caught my attention was the smug look of the student in front of the Native American and I wonder if he'll still feel that way when in the future, he will be part of the white minority as other race and ethnic group change and reshape the US demography. This is the reason for Trump's MAGA appeal.
Regarding religion, it's history of scandal after scandal speaks for itself.

@TheHorse _You make a good point. Smugness is no reason to assume he was part of the group of jeering students behind him. Just because he was wearing a MAGA hat like the others is not definite proof of being a racist. Maybe Trump was right about there being good people also who were shown carrying tiki torches at Charlottesville.
The "clock incident" was clearly stereotyping and profiling.
*Just watch another video and apparently the earlier one gave us the wrong perception. Bias was evidently at play here.

With numerous religions in the world which one should we follow? Organised religions have certainly failed me and I have no use for them but that doesn't mean I'm a bad person. I try to be honest, kind and helpful to other people and I don't think anyone of any religion could find fault with that
