Three years ago there was an horrific fire which wiped out the town of Yarloop in south-west Western Australia. I wrote about it at the time and if you search for Yarloop the discussions will hopefully come up. They had a very well maintained museum which show-cased the railway workshops which had been vital in years gone by in keeping the train system functional. The museum was destroyed. The intense heat leaving engines just blocks of molten metal. All the intricate wooden models of cogs and machine parts went up in smoke. Today much of the town has been rebuilt and much of the land has rejuvenated. After the fire we put in a few weekends helping dismantle and roll up burnt fencing. Dairy farmers in the area had their work cut out just keeping feed up to their stock as well as milking twice a day. So volunteers helped clear the paddocks ready for fencing contractors to move in and begin putting in new fences. The two guys with us found the need to put some extra dirt on their faces. I thought I was quite dirty enough as I was. Another thing I remember from the time was a farmer bringing us a huge watermelon. It was hot in the bare, blackened paddocks and the icy-cold watermelon went down really well.

We had a huge fire in CA that wiped out a whole town. It was just this past summer and they are still sifting and figuring what to do. Many from OR drove down to help. I sent items needed in caravans that headed down. I love seeing community banding together. I'm glad you were a part of helping.

We heard about Paradise being wiped out. I can imagine that some people will never really recover from such devastation. In some ways, we're too old for heavy work but this was something we felt able to help with.

We went home pleasantly weary each day. It was nice to be able to help and even pulling up burnt fencing needed to be done and so it was a help.

The soot on the two men's faces made a nice touch. I do feel bad the one is wearing such a small shirt though. I always get so sad worrying that's all they have and my heart breaks . The workshop/museum sounds like it would have been absolutely amazing to tour. How sad what happened to it! I popped on here just now to see if you wrote any new posts because I saw something on Dailybreak that reminded me of you. Of the top 10 best cities to live in 3 of them were in Australia

The two men didn't lose anything in the fire. They were just there helping like we were. And thanks very much for the link. I haven't been to Canberra yet but one day I'll get there.

I love your photo. Truly love it. I'm very sad about that lovely museum. Wooden cogs and machine parts gone? Horribly sad.

This is a photo I took at the museum a year or two before the fire. I did a post on Yarloop in 2016 and put a short slideshow of photos on YouTube. Here's the link if you are interested: http://www.mylot.com/post/2880579/the-end-of-an-era-yarloop-workshops-destroyed-in-bushfire and the YouTube link is on the post.

Thanks. It was something concrete that we could do and it was quite pleasant weather for being out in the open.

It was easy work in a way and left the paddocks ready for the contractors to come in and start putting up new fences.

I think so. I wasn't really impressed that they were trying to make it look worse than it was.

What a horrible thing and such a shame the museum was lost. Everyone has done well rebuilding in three years, that sort of thing can take a very long time.

I guess for some the battle still goes on. Some didn't return to the town.

I faintly remember news reports about fires in Australia, but couldn't say which part of the country was affected. It is not very often we hear about the human scale of these events

At the moment it seems much of Tasmania is under threat with people being told to evacuate. It would be very difficult fighting a fire there - so many hills and mountains and thick undergrowth.

They smeared their faces and clothes with ash for the photo. But it was still quite dirty work.
