It wasn't uncommon for her to walk to work. She would walk to and from work before she got a car, and then after, well the car was one she shared with her sister. Her job was much closer than her sister's and so she usually ended up walking to work and her sister would pick her up from work later. One night her sister was working later than she was and so she decided to walk home. It was only about two miles from her job to where she lived with her parents. The neighborhood they lived in had several entrances and exits, and she chose to take one that would get her off the main road quicker. It was only about a fifteen minute walk from this entrance to where the house sat. As I stated before, it was late. This was before portable music players. She would often pass the time by singing, whistling or humming to herself. This time was no different. She began to hum along to the tune of one of her favorite songs when she first heard it. She couldn't figure out where it was coming from but someone was out there humming along with her. This unnerved her a bit and she began to pick her pace up. She didn't stop humming because she wanted to know where the person was. She began to hum to another song when she realized that the other humming was getting much closer. The person was keeping pace with her. By this point she was too terrified to continue humming. She was nearly at her road when she felt a hand touch her shoulder. She began to run after that, screaming for her mother as she got closer to the house. Her mother heard her and opened the door, ushering her inside. The police were called but the person was long gone. She believed it was a man. She stopped walking home at night after that. Unfortunately, this is a true story. Or as true as I can believe it to be. It was told to me by my grandmother. The woman in the story was my mother. My mom never told me of this story, but then I wouldn't have expected her to.

@hillhjill Told, but yes. I am sure my mom pushed it from her mind. I don't know how old she was. I assume around the age of 15 - 17. Some of the story I filled in. My aunt and mom really did share a car, and I know my mom walked to work. I could only assume that one or the other would sometimes have to walk.

Yes. My mom never talked about it. She either forgot about it or didn't want to talk about it one. I can't say as I blame her. I don't even remember why my grandmother told me about it. I would occasional get these types of stories from her, just out of the blue.

@ScribbledAdNauseum your mom probably pushed it out of her mind, that's something very scary to keep with you, but it's cool that your grandma tells you those kinda stories.

She didn't see the face? Creepy though but at least she turns back and checks who was it because you know it could be her boyfriend or her friend messing around with her.

I don't know all of the particulars. My grandmother told me this and she could have been lying, exaggerating or not telling me all of the information. I think once she started running the person (if they were a bf, or a friend) would have let her know it was just them.

@JustBhem I can understand that. I was home alone not too long ago and I heard something that sounded like it crashed. I looked around the entire house and found nothing. I went to the bathroom later, a tall lamp fell into the bookshelf. That's what I had heard.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It could be. I'm always curious to the extent it will make me frightened. Like whenever I heard someone walking around our house, I check it and see if I know the person.

I would think your mother would have WANTED to tell you that story so that you would be more careful.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, I kind of found the ending leaving me hanging. I kind of thought she would turn around and find it was a friend. It's quite possible you don't have the full story,.

@patgalca I don't know, I can only hope that it was a friend. I don't see why my grandmother would tell me this story. I can't even remember why she did, but it was only a few years ago that she told me. It was sort of an out of the blue thing. I could ask other family members but I also know that my grandmother used to hide a lot of things like this from her husband. My aunt might not remember either.I don't want to ask her in case it actually happened to her and not my mom.

Which is why I assume she either forgot or it didn't happen. I mean, I don't want to not believe my grandmother... I do know my mom used to walk to and from work and so it's very plausible that it happened. It might be that I don't know the full story.

Thank You. My mama was a tough cookie though, and I can just imagine how loud she screamed. Memories of her calling my name when I was across the neighborhood come to mind.

I am sure it was terrifying for my mom. I think she had to be around 15-17 at the time. My grandmother told me about this several years ago and she didn't elaborate much on it. All she said was that a man nearly grabbed my mom when my mom was walking home from work.

Yes, I can't imagine how she must have felt. I think I would have refused to ever walk to work again.

I don't think so. My grandmother was the one that told me about this, my mom never did. My mom had been deceased for several years before my grandmother told me. I would assume that had it been a friend, the friend would have called out to her one she started running, or else called her later.
