Could you lend me $2000? I promise I will pay you back (question from an online friend)

My friend told me that she had found a new online friend. They exchanged emails for a while. One day her new friend wrote to her. ”I really need money. Could you lend me $2000?, I promise I will pay you back” My friend replied: ”Yes, of course I can help you. If you call me we can discuss how I can transfer the money to you” But instead of her own phone number she gave him the phone number of the local police station. She never heard from him again Did you ever receive that kind of request from a stranger? (a person who wants to 'borrow' money) I usually experience the opposite – rich people who want to share their fortune with me. I only have to send them a small amount of money and my bank details

I don't need "friends" who only want my money. I am glad my friend got rid of him.

@marguicha I would do the same for my close friends. I have lent them money and given money to them a few times. Not a large amount, but enough to help them while they waited for their next salary. I know that they would do the same for me. One of them once gave me money. I just moved I didn't have much money for a while. I was very grateful for her help.

@Porcospino I wholly agree with that. And by idea is that I would only lend money (for important things) only to people that are so dear to me that I value them more than the money. I count such people with the fingers of one hand and there are fingers left unused.

@Moon24 @Nevena83 It is also a pretty large amount of money here. It was a strange request from an online friend. Did he expect her to say. "Okay, I'll send you $2000"

I've only gotten scam emails . . . but never such a request from a "friend". But if I did, the friendship is definitely over!

I haven't received that kind of email from an online "friend" either, but if I did I would never contact them again. The person who contacted my friend pretended that he wanted a normal friendship at first, when my friend received that email she knew what his real intentions were.

@much2say It is true. I know the site where my friend found this online "friend" and many of the members aren't really looking for friends. I have received some strange messages from some of the other members, and I today I don't visit the site much.

@Porcospino That's so deceitful, isn't it? Makes one be very cautious about any friendships made online (or anywhere I guess).

Same as you, I usually get emails from "lawyers" who have money to give me... but they need an advance to make the transfer. Sure!

I delete those emails when 'I receive them, but they keep coming. If the emails were real I would be a billionaire by now. I also receive love scams sometimes. The last one was from a beautiful Russian woman who couldn't wait to meet me

@LadyDuck Yes, they just send those emails to random people and hope that someone will write back. I am sure they had no idea that I am a married woman

@Porcospino I also receive love scam emails, but they do not check if I am a man or a woman. I really do not care for Russian or Arabian women.

Yes, they are everywhere. No one has ever asked to me to lend them money online, but I have received many of the opposite type - people who offer money. I delete those emails every time I see them, but they keep coming.

I have never had it happen to me but I have heard it happening to others. I don't know anybody personally who has sent money but I have read many news stories where people lost a lot of money following for these scams.

Unfortunately some people send money to those scammers. I know someone who did it, I tried to warn him, but it was too late, he had already sent the money Some people have lost more money than he did.

It is important to be careful. I don't reveal any private information if I only know people online. I have met some of my online friends, but I wouldn't invite them into my home or go to their home. We always meet at a public place.

The hell notes are what the chinese burn for their forefathers. It is also something that the people send to taunt others for it is bad luck to receive them.

There are many good things about the internet, but unfortunately con artists also use the internet. The ones I have met all tried to get money in one way or another. A scammer once contacted me when I was selling something online, I reported the profile and it was a removed a few hours later.

@Courage7 It is very sad when people lose money to scammers. Some of the love scammers managed to get a lot of money from their victims before the victim discovered that their "relationship" was a scam.

It is similar to a love scam. Your friend did a good job by not lending money to the online friend. I do not have that experience but I have the experience of people not return the money to me as promised. He is my friend's friend. We are studied in the same institution but in different course. We talked few times and have one lunch together. One day, he approached me when I was on my way home. He ask for money because his car broke down and he demand for RM50. Out of sympathy, I withdraw RM100 to him in the view that we know each other and I believe he will return the money to me in a week time However, I did not get the money as expected. I met him outside of the rest room and he promised to return to me. I also asked for his contact number. Yet, he did not turn up and the contact number is not belong to him. I tried to contact my friend to ask for his detail but he did not know where he stay nor his contact number. So, I think that he just wanted to cheat my money in the first place when he approached me. I am quite disappointed with him and I never see him anymore. The lost of the money to me just a small thing but reflect how his personality is.

I understand why you are disappointed in him. It also sounds to me as if he never planned to return the money. I think he gave you the wrong phone number, because he didn't want you to find him. I agree with your last sentence. that behavior says a lot about his personality. I have also experienced a situation where people didn't return the money they had borrowed. She was my neighbor and my friend and I helped her when she needed money. It wasn't a large amount of money, but she never paid me back.

@Porcospino Yup, maybe he purposely gave the wrong number so that I am not able to contact him for demanding the money back. He also took advantage that both of us were studied the different course thus our class schedule and classroom were also different thus making me difficult to track his location. Even so, I do not mind for losing that small amount of money. I just assume that I have donated it to the needy.

I have some online friends from a social networking site who have become real life friends, but I am careful who I write to, because some people have fake profiles. If I have met them in person it is different.

Do you mean friends that you know in person? I have helped some of my offline friends in the past if they asked if they could borrow some money, but I have to think about my own bills first, and I also had some bad experiences when people didn't pay me back.
