Being Careful not to Kid Around Too Much

I love to make other people smile or laugh, as they appear to be happy. But, I need to be very careful who I kid around with, Online. Some people get highly offended by joking. While others can't distinguish between humor and being serious. That's not a flaw in them. Instead, it's the way they are comprehending what has just been said. To lessen on confusion and to communicate clearly with some people, I need to be very careful to say exactly what I mean. This is hard for me to do, because I desperately want to create a joy-filled world.

I know exactly what you're saying. I'm unintentionally rubbed people up the wrong way here too. Eventually I think you learn who you can joke with easily and who you can't.

@kobesbuddy how did you know that she tried to get your account closed? wouldn't that decision rest on the higher-ups based on their investigation?

Some people enjoy having someone with a sense of humor, lightening up the environment. Others get offended, at times.

Misunderstandings happen more easily online because you can't watch body language, don't see facial expressions and don't hear the tone of voice. All these things carry meaning, too.

Yes, they sure do! I almost forgot about body language. Even a scowl, a dirty look, a smirk, the anger in one's eyes. These are all things that we can't communicate to other people, on the Internet!

Thank you, Jennifer:) I enjoy talking with you, also! This is a blue-bell flower, they come up every summer in our flower garden. I don't know who planted them, probably my mother did.

@kobesbuddy do you mean you never planted this beautiful flower and it comes up every year? how does it do that? don't you need to plant a seed o go to the nursery like my mom did all the time and buy the plants already blooming? do you have any other flowers that "magically" appears like this bluebell?

@Marty1 Annuals come up only one year. They have to be replanted every spring. Perennials come up every year, from a bulb that's planted down in the ground. Wild flowers out in the woods, they are perennials that come up on their own. Tulips are perennials, they will come up every spring. The lilies are perennials, too. We have about seven lilies, that were planted a long time ago.

A joke sometimes comes out differently when written down compare to an actual telling of it. Good thing there are emojis.

@MALUSE is right, online we lack body language and facial expressions. Often we try to keep short our comments and people cannot exactly understand what we wanted to say.

Yes, you kind of have to know people's personalities. It is a little hard to ascertain people's personalities on a site like mylot, and a bit easier on a chat site, as you see how they communicate. Sometimes on here too they assume they have a relationship of some sort with you on here and in reality they don't, and vice versa. Although, you can make friends on here too of course!

I've also offended people accidentally due to my sense of humor, especially online. I was on an international discussion board and there were couple of minor misunderstandings. Interacting with people from other cultures can be tricky sometimes.

I think we are living in an age these days where everything in life offends someone. Sometimes to the point of being ridiculous. I express myself much better through writing than I can verbally. I've had only a few times when someone did not like what I wrote. If it's a good friend I have known online for some time, I do my best to explain my feelings about what I wrote. If it is someone who really doesn't know me very long and they try to judge me, I just move on. Sometimes if they are cruel I will delete their comment and unfriend them myself. Other times they unfriend me. It doesn't bother me. I just feel too many folks are way too sensitive these days.

I agree with you, some people are far too sensitive. Everyone has problems to deal with, but that isn't a good excuse to lash out at others. I have a big problem communicating with people, except when I'm writing on paper or typing on computer keys. Then, I can express my true feelings, it's much easier for me:)

@MistyckMoon When we are writing, it's easy to change the wording, so it's exactly what we wanted to say. With speaking, those words can't go back inside our mouth and change! lol

I joke a lot, and I usually add emojis to show that it isn't a serious comment, but some people still misunderstand that kind of comments. It is easier to misunderstand those things online than offline, because on the internet you can't see the person's face or hear the tone of their voice. I have learned to be careful with irony. I use a lot of irony offline, but I am more careful online, because some people don't understand it and they interpret it literally.

@kobesbuddy I have had bad reactions in the past when people didn't understand my humour or irony (not here but on other sites) I am more careful now. Here on myLot I have seen discussions where people didn't understand a joke. A member wrote a funny response which made me laugh, but the member who started the discusion he responded to didn't understand that it wasn't a serious comment.
