Valentine's Day Memories: School Festivities (Part 1)

When I was a little girl, my elementary school was for Kindergarten through 6th grade. All the classes got to celebrate Valentine's Day every year. It was so much fun! I always looked forward to the annual craft time, which was held just a few days before the 14th. Our teacher allowed us to spend a couple of hours creating Valentine holders out of white paper lunch sacks. Pink, red and white construction paper hearts, glitter and markers turned regular students into brilliant, crafty artists! Shopping for Valentine cards was quite an event. Looney Toons, Disney characters or something else? So many choices! When we got home, it was time to begin the time-consuming labor of love to choose a card specifically for each classmate (at least 20). Then we had to sign them and carefully print their names on the small envelopes. It was exhausting, but fun, and it was worth all the work! Does anyone else have similar memories of preparing for your class Valentine's Day festivities?

The only festivities we indulged in for Valentine's Day was to send cards to people we hated pretending they were from someone else we also hated. Ah, the innocence of youth!!

Thanks for your comment @WorDazz. Well, that's a unique way to "celebrate" a day of love and friendship!

Valentine's Day wasn't heard of in Australia when I was young. All the commercial outlets push it now though.

@BloggerDi True. Retailers don't like missing any opportunities to make money.

Very interesting @JudyEv! I suppose many of "holidays" (even if based on a true person or event) or mostly excuses for retailers to make big bucks!

No, it was never mentioned at school and only once we got to high school (age 11 and upwards) did we notice it, and then it was all about whether anyone would get a card from a secret admirer. I certainly never did, it was rather a depressing day.

Thank you @Fleura. One of my early Valentine's Days was particularly stressful for me too, because I had a huge crush on a boy who didn't feel the same about me.

There are probably many more like you @Missmwngi, who do not acknowledge Valentine's Day at school. Thank you.
