Our class Valentine's Day parties were scheduled in the afternoon. School rules required us to restlessly endure at least a few lessons before lunch break. Party time started 1:30- 2 pm. There's nothing quite like twenty cupcake-devouring kids, full of sugar and high expectations! We finally got to retrieve the Valentine cards from our festive sacks. It took time to carefully open each miniature envelope and discover who sent what. How exciting! Every child received cards. The tradition (rule) was that everyone would bring a card for each of their classmates. When it was all over, shortly before the last dismissal bell, we students were required to help clean up the classroom. Those parties were a fun break from the normal school routine. I have such fond memories of them!
