I have a new project

My father was a farmer but Mum always said he should have been a builder. He built our first house and once he retired he turned to wood-working as a hobby. He built quite a few pony-carts as well as a lot of smaller pieces. I have four bar-stools that he made. I place them near the lounge chairs so each guest has a place to stand their cup or glass. Dad was never one to worry too much about the finish or the timber he used and in the end I painted mine. The floor throughout the house is comprised of vinyl strips that look like wood. We’ve been using stick-on pads on the legs of all the chairs to try to stop any scratching but they continually start sliding off. So now I’m crocheting ‘socks’ for the chair and stool legs. I am hoping they don’t look too obtrusive. What do you think? I have to sew the ends in on the two ‘prototypes’. There are four bar stools and eight dining room chairs. Two down, 46 to go.

I think they'll look good on the bar stool legs. You're very clever!

@lot0724 Thanks. They work well as coffee tables! We have a bar but we never sit up to the bar. We're getting older and like backs to our chairs now.

I doubt they'll be very noticeable really. I might need to do brown ones for the dining room chairs.

I think the socks look much more sophisticated than the neon green tennis balls I've seen used for the same purpose.

wouldn't it slide if you used tennis balls?

Do you recon it's just people in the south who use the green tennis balls or is it a global thing?

Really?? Well, I won't be using them (green tennis balls that is). I thought these socks would be bad enough but they actually look okay.

That's so cool your dad could even build a house. It is a very big talent This stool still looks very new. It is a nice idea to crochet socks for it.

It was in the 1940s that my Dad built a house. Here is his camp where he lived when he was clearing his land to start his farm.

I did wonder about that. They fit quite snugly and the chairs aren't moved much. It's not like they are picked up and shaken or whatever.

I've only crocheted one item in my life and it didn't turn out well @JudyEv it also took a long time for me to do so I went by that

I think they will. They are quite snug and the chairs don't get moved around much. They take very little time to do. I'll time one one day.

I have the same trouble with our chair legs scraping the flooring. In my daughters room I padded the bottom of the chair legs by adding layers of old baby socks to them. It doesn’t look very good but works. I hope your way works and doesn’t wear out to fast. That is a lot of work. It looks much better then my way.

Your idea is good too. I don't know how long these will last but it's easy to make more if I need them - or I could put a bit of padding in the bottom.

I have always valued the building skills of my father & uncle. They grew up in a rural province here in our country so they are used to that kind of work & other stuff too. I promised myself that I will continue & pass on these skills I learned from them to my kids. Kudos to your dad.

Thanks. In those days, if you couldn't do it yourself, it didn't get done. It is good that you are continuing the tradition. We must have saved thousands of dollars over the years by doing things ourselves. And we've been able to have things by making them that we couldn't have afforded otherwise.

@JudyEv Yeah, & it is so satisfying after you've done such a job knowing that you didn't have to pay for the labor. But it seems that we can never be as good as our dads.
