Tough stuff!

The other day a friend, who was going away on holiday, gave me a pint of cream she wasn’t able to use up before leaving. Well, I never refuse free food, but on the other hand I’m the only member of my family who likes cream. Luckily (and rather strangely) they all love ice-cream, so I decided to make this into chocolate malt ice-cream. That was where the fun started. We have chocolate, and we have powdered malt drink - at least we did – but because no-one actually drinks malt drinks the powder had all stuck together in a big lump. I tried shaking the jar vigorously to break it up – no effect. I tried jabbing it with a knife – managed to scrape off a few crumbs. I put it in a plastic bag and hit it with a rolling pin – it just became a slightly flattened lump. I put it in the coffee grinder – and the blades broke off! Luckily it was quite an old grinder anyway, but still…. That was when we decided it was cheaper and easier to buy a new jar of malt powder. It delayed the ice-cream making by a couple of days but the end result was good and the new coffee-grinder is still intact! Picture shows the new jar – other brands are available. Lol, I broke a coffee grinder by trying to make a pesto with it, they have limits. I do not think that these malt powders are available here. Chocolate has a strong taste, does malt adds really something ?

@Fleura Never, I do not think they are available in France. I have also not had malt since several years, I should try it again.

@topffer You will have to try some Maltesers on your next bargain bus holiday! Some people like malt drinks at bed time, made with milk, it is meant to help you sleep.

It does add a different kind of flavour, and goes very nicely with chocolate. Have you ever had Malteser chocolates?

Maybe we should be building things with old, lumpy powdered malt drink. Sounds indestructable.

Well it would be safer than the houses I read about yesterday in northern Afghanistan, built with live missiles left behind by the Russians!

Residents of Qezelabad in Afghanistan have lived for years in homes held up by unexploded weapons.

Oh yes it's very tasty, I should make it more often and that would use up the malt powder before it set!

Yikes! When that happens with brown sugar, a few seconds in the microwave helps me. Glad you finally bought a new jar and were able to make your ice cream. My brother left me a pile of fresh fruit and vegetables. Nothing goes to waste in our family if we can help it.

We still have the lump, so maybe I'll try the microwave method and see what happens, thanks!

Oh dear! I know what you're saying. I've had Milo go hard like that and nothing you do will break it up.

@petatonicsca @JudyEv you'll have to enlighten us ignorant northerners - what is Milo?
