Tough stuff!

The other day a friend, who was going away on holiday, gave me a pint of cream she wasn’t able to use up before leaving. Well, I never refuse free food, but on the other hand I’m the only member of my family who likes cream. Luckily (and rather strangely) they all love ice-cream, so I decided to make this into chocolate malt ice-cream.
That was where the fun started. We have chocolate, and we have powdered malt drink - at least we did – but because no-one actually drinks malt drinks the powder had all stuck together in a big lump.
I tried shaking the jar vigorously to break it up – no effect. I tried jabbing it with a knife – managed to scrape off a few crumbs. I put it in a plastic bag and hit it with a rolling pin – it just became a slightly flattened lump. I put it in the coffee grinder – and the blades broke off!
Luckily it was quite an old grinder anyway, but still….
That was when we decided it was cheaper and easier to buy a new jar of malt powder. It delayed the ice-cream making by a couple of days but the end result was good and the new coffee-grinder is still intact!
Picture shows the new jar – other brands are available.

It does add a different kind of flavour, and goes very nicely with chocolate. Have you ever had Malteser chocolates?

Yikes! When that happens with brown sugar, a few seconds in the microwave helps me. Glad you finally bought a new jar and were able to make your ice cream.
My brother left me a pile of fresh fruit and vegetables. Nothing goes to waste in our family if we can help it.

Yes, you can't even dissolve it in hot water!
