Petroleum based gasoline and diesel are what put an end to the use of alcohol use for the internal combustion engine, apparently there is a connection with the years of prohibition, making it illegal to make your own alcohol from grain.

In India, ethanol mixed gasoline sales have been started on some places but it is still not that widespread.
