My first job was going to Sea but had to go to Gravesend Sea Training College first for 3 months, 1992. I and a few others used to sneak out at night to the pub along the Thames River bank about 1/2 mile away from the college, it is called The Ship and Lobster and I later found out it is where Charles Dickens used to walk along and go to and believed to have inspired much of his writing. I left school at the age of 18 in 1959 and went to work in London with a small jobbing printers as a litho plate maker and machine operator. After I'd been there for 18 months (for the grand salary of £8 a week), the firm went bust and I had to find new employment. I found that I couldn't continue in the printing trade because of Union restrictions (at that time, nearly all printing firms were Union controlled and I was too old to become an apprentice. I haven't had a lot of time for trade unions ever since!). Eventually, I became a bookseller in Cambridge and, one way and another, I was in the book business for the next 25 years or so. When I was about 50, I changed course completely and became an IT Support Person and Trainer!
