Shrimp and Grits

Growing up we had grits for breakfast several times a week. My Dad preferred rice and eggs. We always had fresh eggs to mix with the grits since we had chickens in the backyard. Nothing better than the fresh brown eggs mixed with grits. When living in New Orleans I was introduced to shrimp and grits. I wasn't sure about the combination until I tried it. If you ever get the chance, if you like shrimp, you should try this dish. I cannot get fresh shrimp where I live but I will buy the frozen and saute' them, then mix it all together with my grits and eggs. This is one of my favorite breakfasts of all time. I know some of you do not like grits. It is like a southern thing in the US. But I could eat them any time of the day. This is a photo of mine I snapped after cooking shrimp and grits for dinner. What about you? Do you like grits? Have you had them with shrimp?

You know, I think I'd probably like shrimp and grits but I am not completely sure. It's funny you should mention shrimp... I almost got some coconut shrimp from Trader Joe's today, but I passed on it. I live in the South but I am not a big fan of grits. I have gotten the Autry's Dinner Grits and liked those.

You know - I'm not completely sure what grits are every time I hear about it. I think of it as a corn meal type thing - polenta? - maybe I'm wrong. Interesting though having them with shrimp . . . now shrimp we've love and there's lots you can do with them but I've definitely never had 'em with grits. Was the New Orleans one spicy?

@CarolDM Ah, so like a cream of wheat, but sort of cream of corn? I'm not sure if I've tried it. I love spicy foods, but as I've gotten older I can't seem to handle it as much. I do love andoille sausage (however you spell that).

They are made from corn. Here is a photo of plain grits with butter. And no, I don't eat spicy dishes, even in New Orleans.

I love grits, but since my husband doesn't (he asked me if I'd ever seen a grit tree), I usually just have them when we eat out. They just seem like too much trouble to cook just for me. I also love shrimp, but don't care for combining them.

A grit tree, seriously? I have seen blogs and articles called The Grit Tree. I grew up with them so they are no problem. All in what we are use to.

I do like grits and choose them instead of potatoes when I'm down south. I've never tried with shrimp. I should try them sometime. I do love polenta grilled. I wonder if it's similar?

There is a restaurant in Seattle that serves this, or used too... and they would then mix in some cheese and butter etc with it, and Oh was it good. They also let you choose which side of Eggs you would like with it etc. I sure do miss this.

I've had grits and really enjoy it for breakfast! My Mom was born in the south (NC) and I was introduced to grits on vacation visits to see her family and relatives. I love shrimp, so I would be "game" to combine them for a meal
