Is Being Frank Rude?

Yesterday, I attended a prayer gathering for the one year anniversary of the death of a close relative, when a classmate from the elementary days suddenly blurted to me as she greeted me that I am gaining weight! She said I wasn't like this when I was younger. So I answered her that she is ruining my day, because I am too is having a hard time trying to lose some weight! Could they not just greet in such a gentle manner, not like that way? And to think she is not a close friend; just someone who had been a classmate so long ago. She felt I was annoyed so she remained silent. But at least I sent my message clear. What do you think?

I may be frank, but when it comes to comment like that which can be taken in a negative way, I don't say it. I always would say something nice that can make the person feel good.

@acelawrites I an also be tactless sometimes. I am trying to reform myself from being that. But sometimes, it still prevails.

Some people can be so tactless, not thinking they can hurt feelings.

happened to me in a jeepney with a college classmate so although there were only a few passengers, i knew they saw and heard because her reaction was over the top. i'm glad i haven't run into her again yet.

Probably the most insensitive thing a person can say. Reminds me of one of my mom's former parents in her school years. She made comments that got pissed off my grandma. Good thing mom wasn't there. We didn't get mad directly as she was having a dialysis. She should have been more sensitive. lot of us have gained weight as we grow older.

I agree, and some people should know what to say that won't hurt other people.

I think she was being very rude. If one doesn't have anything nice to say, one should keep one's mouth shut!

I think sometime our true feelings just come out and others need to understand.

I agree, because I think it'snot their problem if I gained weight, and they acted as if they are more knowledgeable about my body.

@CarolDM I could not walk away from her because we were seated in the living room where the prayer would be held.

Your not rude , your just being frank. To think that she is not a close friend of yours who greeted you to start a conversation. but had picked the wrong words to begin with.

@acelawrites Yeah, some people could be inconsiderate sometimes.

You said it right; she thought I would be pleased by what she said. The wrong choice of words to greet me! Instead of saying "oh you look healthy now!" to say that I gained weight!

We should all treat others as we want to be treated. Sadly not everyone does this, sorry you were treated that way. =(

They thought I would always be kind; but that time, I thought of being offensive too so she won't do it again.

I think that your friend has been extremely rude, this is the worst thing to say. My niece used to tell this to the new companion of her father, just to annoy her. I was really sad when she was so rude.

@acelawrites This is something that no one should ever do, commenting on other people weight.

Am really annoyed when someone comments about my weight; it brings me down because it is one of the sources of my depression.

Big no-nos for most women are their age and their weight, it's rude to mention either.

Yes; people should know that it is a "mortal sin" to mention about the age and weight of a woman! They should know it.

People are so happy to comment on others on their physical structure. Yesterday, I visited a hospital to see some one with another friend. Where people commented on my friend she gained weight. I am just opposite and I am tired up on listening, don't you eat anything, why you are slim like this way... etc. I have no interest to reply to them... it is the nature of some people.
