Spring cleaning

It really feels as though spring is on the way here, so I thought I’d better get on with some spring cleaning. Not in our house though!
A couple of years ago I bought some bird-boxes and put them up around the garden. The received wisdom is that they should be cleaned out, ideally yearly, so that they don’t harbour parasites – but of course you can’t do it too late in spring in case birds have already started using them, and you can’t do it too early in case any other creatures have chosen to hibernate there.
And there’s the added complication that I need someone else to hold the ladder while I climb up!
So last weekend we got the boxes down and found that a clean was indeed a good idea, the remains of two years’ worth of old nesting material was rather uninviting. Scraped all that out, rinsed through with boiling water to try to kill off waiting parasites, and once they were dry put them back up again.
Now we are all set for this year’s tenants!

That is very friendly of you to provide homes for local vagrant birds and small beasties.

You're a good landlord! Very hard work keeping the little birdhouses fit.
