What’s the most annoying thing you have wasted money on?

I’m generally very careful with my money and only spend it when I’m sure I really need something and it’s going to be good value or something I really want, so it’s extra annoying when I waste some on something stupid, and especially when it’s all my own fault! I’m not really talking about impulse buys, but avoidable things – for me in the last few years I have had the following: A £40 parking ticket because while struggling to deal with small child, pushchair and dog in a confined space in the car park I forgot to get a ticket for free parking – Doh! £120 for windscreen repair because while delivering our old tumble-dryer I had sold to someone for £15 I slammed the back window of my car shut and it hit the edge of the dryer and shattered – Doh! And most recently, £60 for overstaying the free two-hour limit at motorway services by 15 mins – Doh! I guess that could be worse but I am still annoyed at myself for being such an idiot. With that extra £220 I could have treated myself to something quite special, but of course I wouldn’t because I would have thought it was too much money to splash out like that – and then I just go and throw it away!! The thing that annoys me is it wasn't really bad luck, just downright stupidity, I could have avoided them all if I'd been thinking properly!

@JudyEv Thank you! Yes I guess you don't want to come right out and say 'Well that was stupid!'

@Fleura I was trying to be kind. It's alright for you to say you're stupid but not so nice if I say it.

I think a lot of people spend more than they should on shoes!

@Fleura you are right and it's very impractical.

It happens . . . I know there are several times I could have kicked myself. Recently, I forgot we still had DVDs we borrowed from the public library - 4 of them which were not even good to watch. They were VERY overdue and the per day charge made me cringe. I probably could have bought a nice new current DVD for that. I never learn my lesson about keeping track of the due date better (mine, but mostly my kids' books) . . . at this rate I think we literally support the library .

I guess at least you can console yourself that you are supporting something worthwhile : )

My niece visited us a few months ago, she parked on the main road and she got a ticket (that I paid) for parking the car in front of the "bus stop". Well they put the sign the same day, surely AFTER my niece had parked the car, the dumb policeman who gave the ticket surely did not know, but I was furious.

@Fleura There was not a bus stop there and they added the bus stop right on that day. It was more complicated and expensive trying to explain than to pay the ticket, but I sent anyway a letter to complain.

Oh that is maddening! You wish you had a photo to prove there was no sign there before, but of course you can't go round taking pictures of every place where a sign isn't, just in case a sign gets put there later!

So sorry. Those sound more like accidents or bad luck. I bought a powder blue pantsuit when on vacation in Brazil in the days I was nice and thin. It was a tiny bit snug, but I loved the color and style and thought I'd knock off a few pounds for it to fit properly. Never happened.

You could say they were accidents, but I could have avoided them all if I'd been paying attention properly. Sorry about the pantsuit. Do you still have it? Maybe it would be worth something as vintage fashion now!

@Fleura I hear you. Those things happen to all of us. Yes, I still have that pantsuit, and I still can't fit into it. I will bring it to a consignment shop.

Monthly electricity bills which my sons have no idea how to reduce our usage. When my older son moved out, we have reduced our power and gas bills significantly. :-D

Wow! I wonder if he's making any more effort if he has to pay his own bills now?

When we use a parking lot where we have to pay we get two pieces of paper from the machine - the one we have to place in the car and the receipt. One time we placed the receipt in the car instead of the other one - and we got a ticket (about $100) That was really stupid because we actually paid, we just put the wrong piece of paper in the car.

That's a bit like my parking ticket - all because I forgot to go to the machine and get a free one! Most annoying and just a small lapse in concentration!

Throughout my life there were people I wished I had not helped ( don't want to go to details) but I had learned to forgive them now and forgive myself for being too stupid and too generous

I know what you mean. You just have to regard it as some sort of life lesson I think. And at least you know you did the 'right' thing in helping hen you could, even if they were not grateful.

In 1970, I bought a great little "ensemble": a coat and slacks of baby blue power. I paid 3 times more than I earned on my weekly paycheck. But you know what? I have never felt bad about it as I totally fell in love with this clothing. It is definitively the piece of clothing that I loved the most in all my years.

In that case if it was something you got plenty of use and happiness from, it wasn't a waste even if it was expensive!

Don't be too harsh with yourself! Of course, it would be good to still have the money but as everything you did wasn't planned but either coincidence or bad luck, I'd try to forget it. There are worse things in life!

Yes annoyingly I took an emergency call pulled over on a red line and got a £60 ticket. It was indisputable as the picture for those blooming traffic cameras are better than the security cameras in the banks that only show unrecognisable faces. It makes you wonder why eh! I saw someone else smash their window as you had done! Oops!

Oh gosh that does seem unfair. I know you can't really dispute the camera evidence but at least with a person enforcing it they could exercise a bit of judgement.
