The boxing kangaroo - another Aussie emblem

In May, we will be joining six friends for ten days sailing on a house-boat on the Loire Canal in France. To say we are looking forward to it would be an understatement. When we toured France in our motor-home, we taped an Australian flag on the back in the hope that people would recognise us as from Australia. We thought we’d do the same on the boat – have an Australian flag in plain sight. However someone suggested the boxing kangaroo would be more instantly recognisable. We now have a boxing kangaroo flag but it’s hard to take a photo of it. However you can see the emblem on this glass. Would you recognise it as Australian? It’s a silly question really. It could hardly signify any other country.

You are the only place on earth for roos. Your flag is the southern star and Union Jack and many people might confuse with other Union Jack kind of flags. A Koala is a good symbol. Or a Foster's sign lol.

The Aussie and NZ flags both have the Union Jack i think and some said they are easy to mix up. But the kangaroo will make it clear where we're from.

@JohnRoberts You and I might know Judy's accent... though lots of people would probably think British. My ex-fiancé was Australian. People thought he was English a lot.

That is what we'd been told so the boxing kangaroo seemed a good idea.

We'd been told that if the French thought you were English, they could be a bit stand-offish so we were keen to let them know we were Australian, not British.

How about having a koala bear emblem on the flag ?

That would work equally as well but I haven't seen any flags for sale that have koalas on them.

I would immediately recognize this symbol as being Australian of course. For those who know, the rooster is the symbol of France.

I would recognize it - seen footage of boxing kangaroos, including one featuring a very young Woody Allen - I thinks such practice is now banned as it should be

@JudyEv We rented a house on a canal somewhere in England a few years ago. I sat out in the mornings watching the boats go by... thinking how cool a holiday that would be... someday ;) How long does it take to fly from Australia to England??

@Hate2Iron I think it's around 24 hours if you don't stop too long in the middle. We're stopping in Doha in Qatar for two nights then going on to Paris.

We're all looking forward to it. From the boat trip we go to Ireland for three weeks to see our son then to Austria for just a couple of days to catch up with a good friend.

Yes, it's hard to disguise an American accent or any other probably. I'm always surprised when people remark on my accent. I never think I have one which is very naive but there you go.

I would recognize that as Australian. I would think that putting your flag up while in France would get you some favourable recognition as you travelled. When our son travels he always wears a little Canadian flag somewhere, either on a hat, or a pin, and he always gets some nice, kind compliments on being Canadian. Its nice to be welcomed across the world like that, as I'm sure you have felt.

It seems quite luxurious really. We'll each have a room with an ensuite but the rooms are miniscule. We only need to sleep in them. The lounge is quite spacious and we can also go up on top where there is seating for twelve. Having our own ensuites is a bonus at our ages.
