I'm not sure if it's fair.. Coupon Sellers

United States

Okay, this will take a bit for me to clarify. While there are people who sell coupon inserts out of their papers, that is not what I refer to. What I refer to is the people who get items for little to no money and then turn around and sell it. When I was a cashier, there were two ladies who used to do that. I couldn't bring myself to truly dislike them, they were very sweet ladies. However, I just don't think that it's fair practice. Let me further clarify.. These are people who watch the store circulars (store ads) and see that Tide is on sale for $5.99 when it's normally $7.99. They have a coupon for $2.00 off any tide product and use it. So they pay around $3.00 for the tide product and turn around and sell it for $5.00, profiting two dollars. If you are on facebook you might see these people in the marketplace or buy / sell / trade groups. I Think it's an awful lot of hassle and that it also makes trouble for those who use coupons more fairly. The manufacturers of these products are less likely to allow coupons for items, or the stores are more strict on their coupon policies as a result. Have you come across the type of people that do this?

I've heard both sides of it. I once talked to a man who went in and cleaned up foreclosed upon homes. Maybe he was lying but I don't see why he would. He said that about 50 percent of those homes had stock piles upon stock piles of things like detergent, soap etc. I think he said he was required to box it up and ship it off somewhere to be sold but he was able to take a few items each time as well.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Wow, well I think if your cleaning out a place and find a stock pile left behind then you can sell it for a few bucks.

I think the people who do this undoubtedly need the cash,,,so I wouldn't have a big problem with it..It is like buying something from the thrift store or a yard sale and selling it on ebay to make a big profit. It's fair if you ask me.

I guess it's just a different / new type of doing things. However, I do know (from working as a cashier and from what I've learned when I did coupon a little) that some coupons scan through on items that the person might not have in their cart. So in this way it's fraud, and I Do know that sometimes the ladies I speak about would do this. They'd go to my register as I would allow it, feign ignorance if asked about it, and eventually our coupon policies changed. I don't know, if it's done fairly (they legitimately pay less for the product) than I see no harm in it. If they are gaming the coupon system, well that's just wrong.

That's essentially what I was referring to. Free or very cheap but doing so via coupons.

I used to buy stuff with coupons and I also used free coupons and sold all of those at the Flea Market. Money is money and when you make a profit there is nothing wrong with that.

To each their own. As long as you aren't abusing the coupon system, I see no problem with it. If you are using coupons that don't match and going to stores that you know doesn't check it, then there's a problem.

@jstory07 That's fine and there's nothing wrong with that. It's when the customer mis-uses the coupons that it irks me, and then they turn around to sell it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I only buy the right product that the coupon is for. I try to buy sale items to get the product even cheaper.

I don't know anyone personally, but have heard of this happening....and don't think it is really fair either! I considered couponing, but never thought to sale the stockpile.

I've seen some really extreme couponers. I don't have the time to spend doing that. As it is, half the stuff there is a coupon for are items I would not buy.

@MommyOfEli2013 As far as I understand it. You have to find circulars, cut coupons, match good deals. I mean, there are website out there that help with all of that.

No, I don't think so, but then coupons aren't that usual here. I've seen some of it on TV and I don't think you can collect coupons here for anything but the Coop, and that'll never amount to that many things or that much money

Oh I see. Coupons are much better and a bigger practice in Canada I think, though here in the US they do it a lot.

It's not fair but I think some amount of unfair is needed in system in order for survival.. closed and tight system ends up creating rebels.

I have heard of it... you tell them what kind of coupons you use and they send you an envelope full of them for a price... That's pretty much all i remember, but it sounds like what you are talking about.

Part of what I was talking about, at any rate. I used to use a site like that. I no longer do. It was good for getting coupons from other regions (within the US atleast).

I haven't seen it personally but I don't think it is an ethical practice.

Saw one pop up on a trade group on facebook just the other day. I'm of two minds about it. If they are getting the items legitimately without gaming a system, fine, but if they aren't? Then it's disgraceful.
