That was an incredible coupon

Hi MyLot, I just found this article, and, well , I sort of fell in love with it. Apparently someone *cashed in* a coupon from 1983. The coupon was for crisco oil, in the amount of twenty cents. It said no expiration date and I guess they weren't fooling. The photo of the coupon looks like the coupon is entirely new. I wonder where the person had it stored all these years? Of course there are comments like - why did someone do this for 20 cents? But I say 20 cents in my pocket is better than 20 cents in the grocery store's pocket - and in the words of my friend who learned it from her grandma - "Cents make Dollars". This, of course opposes what my ex-fiance used to think about (coin) change. When we were in Chicago - the bums (which are apparently on every corner downtown) - would hassle us for money. I would tell them that all I had was a credit card on me (basically true since I didn't want to loose cash money). .... My ex-fiance would freak out, and usually give them money. Or he would agree to give them money, then turn around and run like the wind. One time he gave the beggar a fistful of change (and ran away laughing). He told me between giggles that he had given the man change .... and change is - yknow, worthless. Uhm. Depending on how many quarters were in there it could have been more than a dollar or 2. But whatever - to be fair to him he was from Australia and then had moved to Austria, so he wasn't the most familiar with our coins. But you don't need to be familiar with it in order to know it's not worthless. I did enjoy this though, I wonder what the story was behind all this
Someone used a coupon from 1983 to save 20 cents on Crisco oil. The photo is going viral.

It's encouraging to know that "No Expiration Date" means No Expiration Date. Unlike misleading things like bags of peanuts that imply they are mostly walnuts.

@FayeHazel I never thought of that---The next time I go to a place with bottomless refills, I'm going to insist the server take off her pants (If it's a guy, I'll overlook it). They really should change the All You Can Eat signs to say All You Can Eat While You're Here OR send a lifetime supply of food home with you. Walnuts do sound good, don't they?

@FayeHazel That's a deal! Yeah, and storage space would be an issue...I think. I mean, a lifetime supply of food probably wouldn't fit in the average house. And yeah, a lot of variety would be the better option. Oh, I love pumpkin seeds. I think they are an OK substitute for walnuts.

Oh yeah, in this world that is so full of seemingly false promises like "bottomless" refills (last time I checked the server was still wearing slacks) and "all you can eat" (hey I'm sure after I leave I will be able to eat more again!) ... "no expiration date" coupons are a comfort indeed. And now for some reason I want Walnuts...

I cant believe they were able to use it. We use to give some change when we would go by someone on the streets.. until they were found as liars and not needing it. Shame.

I guess that is why they put a date on them. while 20 cents is 20 cents, can't be as much of a bargin as it was 36 years ago!

That is amazing lol. I have some pretty old magazines lying around, I'm going to look through them... but I don't think that I would use a coupon. I would probably frame it lol!

I don't know how exactly a lot of people got the idea that change isn't really money but it's very common. And funny, in a sad way. And it extends way beyond change. I used to work with a lot of people who didn't make much money but every year, they were suddenly "rich" at tax time because they got refunds. Before this, I had never understood how tax preparers could offer Rapid Refunds. It makes sense if you have a desperate emergency that requires very fast money right at tax time but there couldn't be enough of those cases to make the programs feasible. But who else would do it? Nearly everyone I worked with and obviously millions of others. One year, one of the girls who did this was getting around $4000 back and she mentioned she paid $400 for Rapid Refund so she could get the money in 3 days instead of two weeks (Or less. My refunds usually come in about 8 days even though the IRS says two weeks or more) and someone asked her why she would spend that much. Her answer was, "What's $400 when you have $4000?" She really couldn't afford it. She was barely making it, financially, just like all the others but for the 2 or 3 days the refunds lasted, they were able to buy lots of stuff. And they did. And then it was back to barely having enough money to buy gas to get to work. I'm convinced that it's the same thinking that your ex-fiance had...Well, I know it is because they would also ridicule people who stopped to pick up coins on the sidewalk.
