Why donations and giving to poor never works

I have been observing many countries on this topic including mine. And after observing enough of them I realized that the donation and giving to the poor never helps them change their days. What they do with donations and money? 1. Drunk people continues to drink 2. Drug addict person continues to drink. 3. Single homeless mother, spends it on looking good, remains poor. 4. Homeless guys burn the money quickly instead of saving Important thing: Once a person learn to depend on others money, they will find ways to stay dependent and keep that situation forever. If you are planning on giving to the poor, avoid giving money. Give them skills, job, and food and the means to survive. Money never gets used for right purpose. That's what I can tell you so far from observation. What do you think? Do you have any different observation?

Instead of giving people fish, we should teach them how to fish? Does seem to make a lot of sense!

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he shall eat for a life.

Or, as Groucho Marx once quipped, "If I catch a man to fish I can sell it to him. If I teach a man to fish I lose a wonderful business opportunity." Sorry, that joke never gets old to me and I afford myself any opportunity to tell it.

Since my family was hungry and homeless for 7 months and now we are not--I guess your observations might be wrong? It did take money, prayers and help to get us out of the situation. But thank God people did give us money to buy food with while we were in the situation. The thing is to listen to the Lord when giving-He will tell you what people truly need. One thing I have learned through my years is the image I am going to share with you here.

I don't think the observation made here is wrong at all. Statistics quite well prove that. BUT, the ONLY people who get off the dole and/or get out of a bad situation are those who refuse to remain on it or in it and DO something to get out of it. Most people on the dole do not make the effort to get out of their situation and feel quite entitled to be taken care of by someone else. You and your family are the exception to the rule.

Ofcourse my observation goes wrong. Because there are cases like flood, earthquake where some of the time support does reach. But I was actually checking specific context where politicians and business people donate and it never reaches where it is meant to.

@skysnap But that is an ENTIRELY different situation and circumstance and has nothing really at all to do with the real underlying problem with poverty and homelessness.

I agree with your observations though there are always a few exceptions just to be fair.

I encounter a people like that and when we give food they dont accept it, because they want is money but I don't give them, because its important to give a food than the money

I usually give out food but there are also some who won’t accept it insisting they want money.

Yup. Offered a guy one time who was standing on a street corner holding a sign that said, "Will work for food." Told him he could come to my place and mow the yard. He said, " Do you have money instead?" So much for "working for food" @weevee18 .

I cannot agree more. We have been doing social welfare programs for 60+ years in this country, and the number of poor has not fallen. It has actually gone up. The less a person has to fend for themselves, the less they will try to fend for themselves. The only thing I disagree with is giving food as well. Job skills are most important. Food pantries generally serve the same people week in and week out...so simply feeding them is not solving any problem.

Interesting observation on pantry. I have noticed something similar but it is small sample size. there is one company named Venky's who is into frozen chicken. They do have outlets like KFC and they often give away good food every night to the poor and homeless. after getting free food every night they realized that those people don't have motivation to do work or anything productive.. but on the other hand I know few people who do work hard and are not able to have enough food on the table. so it's kind of complex problem.

@skysnap The people that do work hard and still have trouble with their finances, their work ethic is not their problem. Their inability to manage money properly is their problem. I often tell the story of a lawyer I knew and a guy who owned about 12 Burger King restaurants. The lawyer was broke having always made six figures in his life while the Burger King owner started when he was 16 working for the chain, made VERY little money, but saved incessantly and moved up in the system before finally being able to buy his first store around age 30. He is a millionaire and the lawyer is flat broke and in debt. It's never about how much someone makes. It's always about what one does with what one makes.

I find each person is different especially in the case of homelessness. Everyone has a Story. Sometimes they may not always be the most Trusting or Truthful person then there are some who really do need the help and appreciate anything someone is able to do for them

It kinda seems like an excuse people use to do nothing. I haven't taught anybody to fish, have you? If I give someone money, I am giving them an opportunity. If they don't use it well, at least I offered them the chance.

I observe it too; some people rely on doleouts; so better give them the tools for them to make a change on their living conditions. Teach them to fish, rather than give them fish, as the saying goes.

indeed. I just can't trust some charities and politicians because they can get in between the process of our money and the needy.

@skysnap You're right. There are many scams here. Organizations allegedly collect money and never go to the right place.

Yes, what you said is also very true. there are people who are profession in receiving not thinking about their future, There are finding in India, like in city dweller, there are many beggars and homeless, they stay in street. So govt. decided to build the house and accommodate them but what they do, they rent and still continue stay in street
