My husband bought me a metal detector for Christmas but it seems to detect everything. I dug a good 12 inches down when it detected something and found a bottle cap. Any suggestions on how to use the blasted thing.

ouch....were you digging in soil or sand? cause it must have taken you quite a while to dig 12 inches! I think sandy beaches are way easier to hunt in.

Well, as my mother used to say, it beats a sharp stick in the eye! :) Like you said, it's 26 cents more than you had before! Do you keep your "found" money seperate so you can keep track of it? How long have you been doing this? Have you found a lot of stuff or money?

YEs I keep it seperate, I Have found alittle of most everything. Lots of trash until I figured out how to tune out the trash sound. Then lots of pennies.

Check the local parks, carival grounds, anywhere people congregate. Check around lakes and old swimming holes, people lose things there. If you live near a beach, check the beach. krissy

Hey, not many other hobbies offer financial reward as fringe benefits. here's a tip, do not hunt in any water in Florida! In most cases, it is now illegal. You can hunt down to low tide line on the beach, but not in the water.

Hello my friend. You only found 26 cents ? Oh that is really not that much. I haven't went to such an event yet, but I have read on the subject. Recommendations include going to beaches to search through the sand or going to waste dump holes, or fields. This I expect to be a long time activity if you want to actually find stuff. Also you have to set the equipment for detecting certain metals - as far as I know it will not detect everything on default settings. Also, depending on the quality of the detector, you can get to see under half a meter below, or less - but more means more expensive as well. Thank you for the good discussion, With respect, Alex from Bucharest, Romania.

Check some of the construction areas where houses have been torn down.I find alot of nice things around old houses that have been torn down. Some great finds in places like that.

I am a newbie as I got my first metal detector for Christmas, but you could try doing a groups search and message board search for useful info on the subject.I have been out 3 times with mine and I have found nothing but some iron scraps, and 2 fishing line weights...LOL.But keep trying ...maybe you could try your local park,I have thought about trying the camping area of our state park here...will let ya know if it is any good.
