Depends on what you're into, but I've always liked Fisherman's Wharf in San Fran, along with Ghiradelli Square (maybe they're at the same location).
In LA I liked Griffith Park (which includes the famous observatory and Greek Theater), Hollywood Blvd. I also enjoyed the La Brea tar pits.

If you're into shopping then I'd suggest Rodeo Drive (you should check out Beverly Hills just so you can say you did!), 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, The Grove in the Fairfax district (a very upscale mall) & Hollywood & Highland. There's some good people watching in those areas too.

Personally, I would visit both of the Hard Rock Cafes. I collect the pins. In S.F. I think it would be cool to take a tour of Alcatraz. I've heard it is very interesting. Also, you should check out the peirs. And in L.A., you could take a tour of the stars homes. I think that would be cool. Other than those ideas, I don't really have anymore. I have never been to either area so I don't know many attractions.

There are lots of museums in San Fran. I've always found it interesting how many historic and artistic places they have... You should definately wander around the pier, I know others told you to, but I'll say it again...
As for LA you really can't go wrong heading to the beach, today it was almost 80... I'm sure you'd like Santa Monica, and Venice, they are very contrasting places... Santa Monica has the typical rich socal look that you see on shows like Laguna Beach and the OC... Venice is a liberal area with plenty of hippies and bums hanging around the beach, but there's always entertaining things going on there including street performers... Have fun, unless you already went two weeks ago lol...
