How important is the Library?

United States

There is a major protest going on here in my home county. In order to cut money from our budget the local politicians are lobbying to close our local libraries. People are in an uproar over this. Here is my question in today's day in age with the internet and the information available at a touch of the button is there a need for a library in a town/city? Or is there more a need for internet cafe's where people can go in and access the web for information that way?

i think that the library isn't that important as it used to be, because now the internet is the huge library of the world and i don't see the use of libraries anymore

Yes, the internet offers up a wide supply of information. However, not every site you go to is up-to-date, or a quality source of information. You will have many people thinking something they research is true and valid because they found it on a particular website, and they don't realize that not every site is a valid and reliable source for information.

internet is never a real substitute for the Library . Moreover only a few can have access to internet whereas all can approach a library . And internet is rather expensive and library services are free or at a less membership price .

This is true and I agree but then you have those people who come back with this. Kids can use there school libraries or computers for papers, research etc.. I have heard that argument before. I would like to see a poll on how many homes have a computer in them or access to one. It maybe more then I think.

what about adults who may need to do some research? I really hope they decide against this.

It's going on here also. Our local library was shut down due to budget constraints. Residents want the library, but don't want to pay higher taxes to have it around; therefore, it's gone. Maybe you're right about information being so readily available on the internet today. I'd never looked at it like that before. If more libraries close, I bet there will be more internet cafes opening. We should open one and call it "Your New Library".

University of Saskatchewan Library - Library as the best place to get information
I like your question. I strongly agree your opinion says that today's day in age with the internet and the information available at a touch of the button is there a need for a library in a town/city? Or is there more a need for internet cafe's where people can go in and access the web for information that way? But, you have to remember that not all peoples have their own PCs whether laptop at home. We must also consider the unaffordable peoples that don't have even pc at home. I got PCs with internet connection but i always come to library because i find that the information that there were more specific rather than the internet. Not all informations at the internet were correct. I only use the Internet for certain reasons.

I think there is no substitute for library. Although internet is important, Library is the core of all.

Brick and mortar libraries are important becuase 1. Not everything is on the internet, especially historical/older documents and such. 2. There are these neat people called "reference librarians" that are in the library that you can ask for help to find what you need and what is helpful to your search. 3. The library is open to all and can have computers for those who can't afford them at home. 4. All the resources you need, internet and hard copy are all neatly in one place in the library. 5. In the library you can just wander along the stacks until you see something interesting to read, on the internet you have to have an interest already. That's it for now. Money on libraries is never wasted. An educated populace is the always a good thing.

Well librarys are important because you can sue them for the resources, and learn things , obviously the politicans must belive that people dont need them and can learn elsewhere , its a shame cos librarys have a function too , help find jobs, learn , meet people , and gain knowledge to learn , livelong and prosper :)

well all or most libraries do have internet access i think we need them around if u got everything on the comp no one would ever be out of their house. the lib is a good reaserch tool i use the one right down the road from my house. I sometimes get so much diffrent stuff on the internet i need a book because the internet stuff conflicts with eachother. so i think we need em.

This is pretty much the same debate as to whether it's better to keep all files on paper or on the computer. Sure the files on a computer are far more efficient ... until the power goes out! Keep a paper record because you can never tell what the future has in store.

I think there is always going to be a need for library's and it kind of scares me to think of some shutting down. Learning never stops and I don't think people should be so dependent on their computers. There should be an option to go to the library and research things especially since there are always going to be books/magazines that just aren't available on the internet. Don't limit what people can learn to save a couple of dollars;(

I definitely agree with you on this. It will limit those in her community from having access to a wide variety of information.

Libraries do more than stock books for usage by the public. In many cases they also house historic information about the areas we live in. Also, if they close your local library, what will happen to all those families that may not have access to a home computer, and utilize the library for that purpose. I know our school often assigns our kids projects to be researched and written by using only book, periodicals, and reference texts. They feel it is very important for students to learn to research that way as well as by searching online. Also, my youngest, she loves trips to the library to look for new books. It will in essence take away that quality time that parents can have with their children spurring their young minds to want to read and learn. Think about the families that can't afford to always walk into the local bookstore to buy books for their kids or themselves, where will they go to borrow a book? I think it could do more "dumbing down" of your community than any real good. It is ashame that your local politicians cannot see who will be affected by doing that. I think I would be so sad if I couldn't take my child to the library and watch her become so excited over checking out a book.

library is an informative place but on the same time, its boring too. Thats the reason why cc's are people's top-most piority.
