What makes people jump on the net...

I mean why jump on the net for advice on some things? When you have a small community that you frequent it is a bit different but when you jump on something like mylot and start asking medical advice I get a bit worried! To start with you have the stupid replies that you KNOW are just not worth reading, but then you also have some potentially dangerous replies that sound like common sense - BUT...you don't know these people (they may or may not say they are a doctor and they may or may not actually BE a doctor). Why not just pick up the phone and make an appointment to see a doctor? I've seen so many emails go around like "Learn how to save someone's life if they are having a heart attack!" and you think GOOD IDEA! FWD FWD FWD And then find out it is completely unsubstatiated! So any thoughts anyone??

Sometimes I ask medical questions just to get ideas. I would definitely check things out before I tried it if I thought it was potentially dangerous. My mother was having a lot of problems with muscle pain and weakness. She went to 2 doctors and they had no idea what was causing it. Finally someone mentioned lipitor she was taking. Turns out that was what was causing her problems.

Thanks lucy! Yes I agree with that - it's always good to get a fresh outlook on things but I was meaning more the threads/discussions along the lines of: Help! My baby keeps throwing up and her temperature is double what it normally is! (Slight exaggeration there but you get the idea?)

in some countries doctors are expensive and some people can not afford them, besides I use mylot to expand my knowledge. IF some people want to be stupid then it's really upto them.

When I say net I mean a forum not just the internet in general...
